but im not sure...this was 12u girls softball played under asa rules but im wondering about fed or little league too...left handed batter and runner on third....pitch in dirt bounces off catcher and rolls a few feet behind the batter, who just freezes in the box..runner comes home...the catcher takes a few quick steps to her right, grabs the ball, steps back and then has to stop and reach around the frozen batter, too late. i called the batter out for interference and sent the runner back....fed softball rule 7-4 art 4 mentions "..or by failing to make a reasonable effort to vacate congested area when there is a throw to home and there is time for the batter to move away"..but this wasnt a throw...in little league by 6.06 c i would be wrong....

i dont know..it certainly looked like the batter was interering

I believe that if there is less than 2 outs the runner is out, With 2 outs the batter is out,

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

This is very similar to the thread posted last night by jboval caller "Batter Interference?? in this same catagory." It is definately INT by a batter...7.09c covers it (or 7.09d...depends on what book you're looking in: ....OBR, Dixie Baseball > 7.09d, Babe Ruth Baseball > 7.09c )..but who is out depends on how many outs there are at the time. Before two outs.... the runner is out. If two outs the batter is out and the run does not count.

Sorry about the late delay, but I had to dust out my new ASA book for this one (Had to find it first). The ruling you are actually looking for is 8S which states that the batter is out when interfering with a play at the plate. The play is dead and runners must return to the last base legally touched at the time of the interference. Good job!!

It is the same in all codes so I will quote OBR. What ou say is true for 6.06c situations but when the ball got away and had to chase it, then 6.06c is out the window. Now you are into interference by a teammate and somebody is going to be out but depends the number outs.
