The reason for teaching mechanics and to wear proper uniforms is to put everybody on the same page. The uniforms are make look and more professional. If you look like an umpire you may put more into the game. As far as mechanics, they are written by guys that have a ton of experience to put you in the best place to make a call.

Now I will agree there are guys that get so hung up on looking perfect they miss the umpiring part. Doing the mechanics correctly is so you can work with anybody in your group and to be in the best spot to make a call. Are they gospel, absolutely not. There are times that things blow up and you have to adjust, but they are exceptions. I know guys that are the type that are all concerned with being letter perfect on every play but can't make a call to save their life.

I think sometimes we get carried away with how we dress. Like trying to match the width of of the strips on the collar. Give me a break. Don't get me wrong. I think there is a place for this. Like HS Playoffs or maybe even Hi level Babe Ruth, LL, USAA and others. But not regular season REC ball. Or low level HS.

I say go out there and wear non faded or wrinkled clothes. Basically just look good and call a good game.

I understand what you are saying Jax but when many have a limited budget to buy uniforms we try to advise them to buy the best they can and still match their partners. When you have a company like OS that has cheap shirts but they don't match anything else out there, is it a good buy? Their strips don't match but neither do their colors of the shirts. If you are discussing Ump-Attire vs Honigs vs Majestic then it becomes more of personal preference or price. All their stuff is going to basically match each other. You take Cliff Keen or OS, they don't and as such we suggest staying away. Now if the whole assoc is buying from them then go for the inexpensive shirts. If you are in a league where you are happy to get the guys to wear any kind of uniform then matching doesn't matter.

I do agree Mike. I always advocate buying the best you can. But in reality that doesn't happen all the time. It is usually the newer guys or those "Veterans" that are content in calling REC games all the time.

Those of us that want to advance and are Umpires will do our best to match each other.
