I was working a game with a partner and after the game we got to talking about strange plays that happen in games--here is the situation he discribed-- feild has a raised home plate(about 1/4 inch) and some of the dirt in front of the plate was gone-- runner on 3rd, pitch comes in and hits the front end of the plate and the ball goes straight back to the pitcher, pitcher then turns and catches the runner off 3rd--what is the rule??? does the play stand??? He ruled to let the play stand with out much lip from the coaches. As we where talking he said he made the wrong call and the night of his game he went throught the rule book and came up with a balk should of been called. After thinking about it he might be right--like to know what you all think.

So you have a wild pitch that is fielded by the pitcher. And you want a balk? For what?

The pitch made it to the plate.

Yes. It was a pitch which did not enter the strike zone. Foul line has nothing to do with it unless it slips out of his hand. This didn't. Therefore, it is a pitch.

See 2.00 "Pitch"

A PITCH is a ball delivered to the batter by the pitcher.

Most batted balls are hit before they cross a foul line. So they don't count because the ball didn't cross a foul line so it isn't a pitch?

I agree to let it stand. I can understand how he thought he got it wrong but he didn't. The lesson to learn here is always landscape in front of the plate when you brush the plate. I always smooth out the dirt in front and any divits in or make the front edge isn't exposed. It saves balls doing crazy things, the cup shot you save may be your own. :)
