I'm watching the ALCS and Fox Network has miked PU Jerry Layne. Fox broadcast a between inning conversation between Layne and Mike Scioscia about Angels catcher Mike Napoli squeezing inside and impairing Layne's view. Scioscia suggested Napoli could set up lower.

MY OH MY how the pros are SO aware of the umpires on the field and how the amateurs are SO oblivious. . .

I'm watching the game...

But I'm seeing other stuff. Some bad calls. And lots of them...

Dale Scott missing a pick off out call, and McClelland missing two calls: a tag up where I'm not quite sure what he was looking at, but he called Swisher out; and there was a sure double out where Cano and Posada were off the 3rd base bag, but seemed to me like he got straightlined and didn't see Cano off the bag.

More and more calls...I'm sure someone will post these calls here. I would, but I can't right now so go for it...

I didn't see the game but I can only assume it was another rough night for our friends in Anaheim last night. My news feed had over 100 articles sent and most of the titles were critical of the umpires.

"rough night" is probably the best understatement that I've heard for awhile.

A few years ago when Fox first put a mike on umpires I was pretty excited. But quickly became disappointed when every time a coach would come out the umpire would (wisely) turn off the mike.

Now I see it as a tool to skewer umpires. Unless you've umpired you don't know what it means to be squeezed on pitches and have to talk to the catcher about giving you a look, and when played for the general public it makes the umpires look bad especially when announcers like McDouchebag add their ignorant comments about the situation.

I think Layne handled it very well, and I bet he even asked the catcher himself to give him a better look.
