Play at the plate?

The original play happened under ASA fastpitch rules, but I wanted to get the rulings of any governing body of baseball/softball that this play could happen under. F1 pitches a ball which hits the dirt and slides underneath F2 and lands and stops underneath PU. PU scrambles to get out of the way, but in doing so accidentally kicks the ball away from F2 (F2 had no idea where the ball was yet as this was all bang/bang) allowing R1 to score from 3rd base. What would the following call be?

Sounds like safe to me. There is no umpire interference which is what you are asking.

That is what I wanted to know. Of course when it did happen to me the game was a complete blow out and the coach whose team it was against was a real hot head so my partner and I just said we'd put the girl back on third as to not cause any drama. This game wound up being the last game of the season anyways.

While it may have worked to appease this time, you now know what to do next time. If you have this coach again and it happens again, you are going to take some heat for doing right now. But, that is what you will have to take.

I understand you were not sure of what to do and handled it the best you could and with what you felt was right. That is mildly acceptable. I say that b/c many say it is completely unacceptable to not know the rules in the first place. But, I would accept it mainly b/c you made the decision then but have made an effort to get the correct ruling for the next time. Good job!

But, now that you know the correct ruling, Don't call/rule something just to appease and avoid any complications. We are out there to enforce rules no matter how mad someone may get. So, the next time you have this hot head and that play happens against him, make the correct call and send him to the parking lot if need be. Don't make up rules when you know what is the right rule.

MY visit went something like this when I walked over:

Coach: Bill, you kicked the ball, that has to be interference.

Me: Rich, that's not interference, that's a catcher who can't catch.

Coach: Kinda like......that dog don't hunt??

Me: Exactly!

Coach: See you at the VFW after the game?

Me: Exactly!

Haha.....I wish I could have done that, but unfortunately the only coach I got along with on that level was the game before.

Of course if you think that you kicked the ball on purpose then you have Interference and maybe an Ejection!:WTF

I tell ya, an ejection of myself would have been a great thing that day. It was hot as hell, I was sick as hell, an all-in-all, this was a game from hell.

i believe, at least in asa, that the only umpire interferences are the umpire interfering with a catchers throw on a steal and and on a field umpire if he gets hit with a ball in front of the infielders (unlikely in softball)...i think

I believe youa re right, too, th3!! I was needing this information to settle a dispute between me and my partner. He's the one that came up with that off the wall ruling. I wanted to leave it be.
