:banghead: I want to start this by saying I had my worst game ever last night and get this no complaints from the coaches. It was a long day topped off being stuck in traffic but made it there with plenty of time. In the first inning a loudmouth from the OT complained about a strike hitting the dirt. Then a jagmo sitting behind the dish bitched about a low pitch in the dirt a called strike and the next pitch hit the dirt called a ball and she said it was the same location. I stop the game and tell the coach to remove her i was boiling f ing mad at this point. He came back and said if she continues boot her. I couldn't do that because she already got to me (sorry MRS Luna for using got teacher jr high) under my skin. A couple innings later a banger at third right in front of their fans the kid put the tag high I sell the call a booming SAFE and you could hear all the pissing and moaning in North Carolina. After the inning the third base coach tells me I was right and the DC tells his kid to apply the tag lower next time. I could write a book about this game I ring a kid up on strike 2 and now I am the village idiot. The very next batter I said there is 2 outs and the OC corrected me and said no just one out. After the game I was praised for a job well done. Imo I was horrible[

It sounds as though you were by yourself. If so you can only have so bad a night. It is hard on your mechanics to work by yourself so they have room for complaint. As to the fan, yune her out. Unless she is affecting play, is obviously drunk or is attacking the participants then just shurg her off. I know it's tough but I look it as just a knucklehead removing doubt whether they are one or not. The coaches telling you good job goes back to the other thread about their comments are to taken with a grain of salt.

I am one to do a pretty self critical eval after every game......but like MST says, it sounds as if this was a one man game and as such you should only take yourself to task so much...

The next thing is that we have all been there....There are just some nights when things just dont go our way.....there are times when our "real life" interfere.....keeping in mind that for the vast majority of us Umpiring is an avocation and not our vocation....so we have to juggle everything....we need to shut off the day to day and then completely focus on the game......yet sometimes that "shut off" switch just doesnt shut completely off........

I wish there was some way to determine when these days will come, yet in all my years, I can only tell you of one time when I knew I was not in the right frame of mind to do the dish....It was the COLT level playoff game and I was scheduled to do the dish, and on the way to the game, I could not focus....and I proceeded to have a night much like yours....

Hang in there....shake it off....nothing you can do will change it, sounds as if the coaches didnt think you did as bad a job as YOU think you did.....which in my mind is the way it should be....

Focus on the next game, the next pitch, the next play.....and in passing...if it didnt bother you, then I would worry.....it shows to me that you care to do a good job.....any time you stop caring whether or not you did a good job is the time to quit imho.....

hang in there...

I echo Michael, it sounds as if you were SOLO. If SOLO where was your partner or does this league simply schedule 1 umpire.

You said

It was a long day topped off being stuck in traffic.
Were you coming from work?

Suggestion: If you are going to contiue umpiring SOLO I suggest you say NO for during the week assignments. It's difficult coming from work (where you could have bad day or good day) then fight thru traffic and finally get to the game site.

Your mindset due to work / traffic is not what it should be and now you are SOLO to boot. It's one thing if you have a partner and can take some of the 'load off" it's quite another working SOLO.

In a nusthell tell this league to get you a partner so that you can alternate base / plate responsibilities. If they refuse cut -down on your assignments especially during the week.

Ignore the fan UNLESS they become unruly and effect the game. If the fan is unruly and effecting the game, then ask one of the coaches for assistance. If you get no cooperation then simply stop the game, go to your car (do not change), stop (away from the complex) change and have a cold one or simply go home change and have a cold one and the most important thing - RELAX.

It seems most of the time when I'm by myself I have my worst games.. and it's just because it's hard to juggle some games when your by yourself when you have a lot of things going on. Don't worry about it.. move on.

Oh, BH, you missed a Golden Opportunity:

2 years ago, SP SB (Co-ed, Pitch and Giggle Ball). Pitch one comes in "Strike".

Next pitch: "Ball"

Batter: "That was the same pitch, Blue!"

Me: (swear to God) "You know, you're right: Count is 0-2"

Everybody got it except the batter.....
