tread lightly:BD:...what is wrong with looking like a softball umpire? My association wants the BU to have an indicator. nuff said.:)

I bought an HSM last year and used for about 80 games (softball and baseball). Other than the ringing when the helmet took a hit, I have no complaints. I wear my hat underneath, remove it any time I would my regular mask, and have not found it to be hotter than a regular mask. :wow:

I would have CI also. As far as the twist, it can be a judgement thing. If you judge that the foot position caused the CI then You would have the batter hitting out of the box. And you have to deal with what comes next from the coach. I'm not sure that this would be an easy determination to make. There is a lot going on in a short amount of time and little space. Most umpires will "miss" the foot position. Those lines get rubbed out very early in the game.

What I was talking about is under what circumstance the "last time by" does not correct the baserunning mistake. From what I see in the BRD and J/R, missing the base by more than 3 - 6 feet (judgement call) is a "gross miss" of the base. I was aware of "last time by" but not the "gross miss" until this thread and the research I did to provide an accurate answer. If I run into this gross miss, I will just tell the knowledgeable coach that "last time by does not apply in this case".

Actually the miss must be a real attempt to touch the base but missed. The example of R1 gets passed 2B when the ball is caught, if he: cuts across the grass to get back to first, missing 2B, touches first and then proceeds to 2B and 3B on the overthrow, is still subject to appeal. turns around steps over 2B on his way to 1B, missing 2B, touches first and then proceeds to 2B and 3B on the overthrow, is not subject to appeal. Make sense?

There's a guy in my association started umpiring baseball in 1951. He started football and basketball in 1952...and he still is doing all three. He told me he served in WWII...do the math. My first V game behind the plate, he's got the bases. As I walk over to his car, I look and see him sitting there reading the "Rules by Topic" book with a highlighter in his hand. We had a thorough pre-game, led by me. He chimed in at appropriate times and then we walked down to the field. He covered his position as well as anybody and we had a pretty good game. There was an appeal at 3B. He called the R3 out for leaving early (he didn't). The HC came out and questioned him on it. My partner came to me and asked what I had. I thought about pointing out it was my call but just told him what I had --The runner left after the catch. He reverses his call and heads back to his position. Yeah he took some heat from the other coach, but he knew he made a mistake and took the heat and we got on with the game. That's a pro. I'll work with him again.

:wow: Good thing we're not on umpire.org!!!!!! Most umpires use an indicator to keep track of balls, strikes and outs. Some even track innings or runs. This is usually kept in the left hand causing a learning challenge for handling the mask. If you have a clicker in your hand, where is your indicator. :clap:

The appeal is because R1 never made it back to 1B in the revised scenario. It wasn't clear and that's why I asked. JM responded offline.

This exact play is covered in the BRD, play 6-4 (p 15, 26th edition). "...Ruling: If R1 touches first, second, and third in order, he is not in jeopardy of an out on appeal. He corrected his error on his last time by."

Revenue is very important. If it's not the gate, then it's someone's taxes. I work football as well as baseball and the V fee is within a dollar. He it is looked at as the time spent. V softball pays less than V baseball and V football. ALso in Football you can have between 5 and 8 officials (some of our schools use officials for the chains and the clock). That adds up to a lot for one game. It's a good thing they have that revenue to rely on. In the real world, it's the revenue generators that get the money. Why do you think the Yankees can spend so much? They generate the revenue. I'm not taking any side in this specific issue, just contributing my $.02. :WTF

I don't like to work the smaller field for baseball. I don't feel comfortable with the mechanics and I don't want to learn another set of rules variations. The LL (jr and sr) I work uses teens for the small field games. They also will partner an older teen (17 +) with me on the juniors. The kids are pretty well trained and hold their own. Coaches are pretty tame most of the time.

I was going toa HS level mechanics clinic put together by umpires from throughout NJ. My association interpreter had been the organizer of this clinic for about 15 years and had just handed over the reins to another guy. There is usually some down time at this clinic, so I figured I'll bring the rule book with me to read during breaks. Well, lo and behold, the new top guy sees the book in my pocket and calls out my interpreter and the 2 of them ride me for carrying the book for about 15 minutes while the drills are going on. I never bring the book on the field (yes in the car), and I will NEVER bring it to a clinic again!:WTF

Good solution, JM. I can't believe the coach gave up 2 baseballs so easily. Around here, getting 2 baseballs in any usable condition from a freshman team is casue for celebration. Very few coaches give up baseballs as the visitor. "...baseballs cost money..."

I don't find 3-man mechanics that difficult to grasp. Why couldn't it just be a 2-hour block for everybody?

When I was playing, it was accepted that if you hit with the label, you increased your chances of breaking the bat significantly. Just turning it 90 or 180 degrees worked back then.

I'm with Warren on this. I don't mind the coach asking, the catcher's response better be accurate.

Now there's a fine example of preventive umpiring.
