I agree with "Both". Consider if it's sharply hit and cleanly fielded, and R2 doesn't have much of a jump. The force might go to 3B. The DP attempt may then go to first, and the PU is focused around 2B.

Back in '98 or '99, my son Kyle hooked up with an American Legion team that was playing on Doubleday Field in Cooperstown. For him, 'thrilled' is an understatement. He was out of his mind with excitement. Cooperstown!!!!! Doubleday Field!!!!! He rode the pine for the first few innings. The Coach then told him to warm up for a relief appearance. Pitching at Doubleday Field!!!! Somehow he managed to compose himself, do the warmups and take the mound. The result? He threw 5 pitches for 3 outs! He strode off the mound at a brisk pace, head down. The coach says, "Good job, Kyle! You want to throw another inning?" Without raising his head, he said, "Nope."

Yeah, it probably was an American Legion thing. My son pitched one inning. I think I'll go to the "Funny Stories" page and give the details.

Max- Thanks for the great research effort. How about Doubleday Field, though? My son got a chance to play there in '98 or '99.

It's supposed to hit 40 degrees here in upstate NY tomorrow. That will be the first time since.... early December, I think. It's only been above freezing once this year. I don't think we'll get any scrimmages in before the season starts in April. Fantasy baseball, anyone?

The strict rules work both ways, too. Last year, one of the umps, who was about as sharp as a marble, went to watch his sponsored team (which is what we all do as time allows). This joker opened the gate, took a couple steps on the field, and waved to his team yelling 'good luck, guys' or something. The field ump yelled at him, and told him to get off the field. CDP brass was informed. That guy was sent packin'. I don't want any of this to sound negative. It's really not difficult to stay within their rules and still have a lot of fun. It's all common sense and love & respect for The Game.

Majordave: Some rules at CDP are VERY strict: If a coach is ejected, he has to leave the game, leave the park (has to arrange his own transportation), and he's never allowed to set foot on CDP grounds again for (I kid you not) the rest of his life. Consequently, there are very few ejections. They know what can happen. Still, they also know that any umpire who is a halfway decent human being doesn't want to do that to anyone. So it's a bit of cat & mouse. You need to establish authority in the pre-game without being adversarial. The fans are fans. Fortunately, they are mostly seated past the dugouts, in the stands past first & third base. I've heard the grumbling when I'm watching my sponsored team, but I stay quiet and incognito for the most part. I haven't seen anyone in the stands get out of control, though... no loud crybabies or whiners. All in all, it's a very positive experience.

I'm counting the days until the time when Matt stops counting the days.....

Ours is open-book with discussion allowed at each table. I found it distractive; not everyone is on the same question at the same time. This year, I'm going to sit by myself and keep the book closed, just to see how well I will do.
