Ok, so I had a game a week or so ago. Throw comes in from the outfield and hits the catchers mask (on the ground a few feet in front of the plate). At the time we did not call anything, but after the game my partner tells me we should have called a dead ball and 2 bases from TOT. Is that the correct call in the situation (detached players equipment), or is it a live ball? Thanks!

Just to be clear, the verbeage in the rule book is "ordinary effort." Had to explain this to a coach as well, and since I sounded all official and such, he shut right up. :hopmad:

I've done a couple of JV games at 5AAAAA schools, and you would be surprised at some of those coaches as well. The kids are incredibly talented, very, VERY good baseball. The coaches, on the other hand, know less about baseball than the entire Yankees organization (ZING!).

Sorry, it was actually 4 hours now that I think about it. Bout a 35ish min lightning delay, and just an unbelievably slow game. Coaches in and out a dozen times, quite literally one of the slowest games I've ever expierenced on any side of the field.

You would think considering how much they spend they could actually pay a LITTLE homage to us. Then again, the 2K guys are probably somewhere laughing about how they're intentionally screwing us :/

I feel your pain. In my first year doing high school ball, I had a 2 hour, 3 inning affair with the final score at 31-2. Hardly a week later, I had a 7 inning, 4.5 hour game. Final score of 8-5...

After umpiring anywhere from 9/10 to varsity games, two out of three of these have happened to me after only a couple of years. The level of ignorance on some (most) coaches is rather entertaining.

Hey there. Relatively new umpire on the block, couple of years umpiring now with hopes of attending Wendelstedt in two years time .
