  2. I found this post on "Warnings on balks" interesting and have nominated it accordingly for "Post Of The Month November, 2010"
  3. Please do not kill the messenger but it I believe in this case, the PU also must remain with his head in the game. Instead of taking the ball he could have told F2 to "just put it on the ground, I'll pick-it up, turn away but monitoring the next moves ". No harm done. But to throw the ball like nothing happened at his feet..... tricky... But then again.... fast thinking.

    A or B Obstruction?

Guys Guys..... it does not have to be like this. HowkieUmp, you are quiet informed as we JUST reached that status on October 10, 2010"CuraƧao is now a fully autonomous country in its own right, with the Netherlands retaining responsibility for defence and foreign policy." On the island we do NOT play professional baseball nor HS. We just play by the LL rules and the IBAF but adapted locally. However, as said before, the only reason I wanted to have the other rules is for me to be able to discuss the rules on this forum. To be able to understand when you are asking a question and so on. I do not have the money to buy all the rules that's for sure, but maybe bye the end of 2011, I will be able to have them all so I will not be wondering what you all are talking about. Yawetag, to me it meant a great deal when you offered me the manuals. Thanks again. You guys are awesome! Pete included! Kisses,

    A or B Obstruction?

==================================================== Hokie Ump, I will download as much as possible what is free and buy only what is really needed. But the issue is that whithout the knowledge of the rules you guys ump in, I will not be able to discuss on the forum. I will ALWAYS have it wrong. And eventually then, whenever you guys see me online, you will get off the forum to avoid me. Here she comes again.... I have the IBAF rules (of 2004) but in spanish and that's not the same as reading English. translations effects the explanation as well. I normally ump in LL and Big League, A Class and AA Class. (IBAF-rules and I believe adapted). So I won't be needing the rules to be able to ump myself but rather to blend in with the discussions. Thanks for your input. :givebeer:

    Base Umpires

Here it's the PU' call to have the fielders throw the ball in by calling "Bala Afo" which means "get the ball out of the field" and then tells the cather "Segunda" after the next pitch which translated means "Second Base" but in reallity is used as a command to "next pitch will be thrown to second base". However, the BU is there to assist that the play continues without hesitation so, f.e. if the PU is in conferrence with a manager, the BU takes over and get the fielders, batter and so one ready for whenever the PU feels like it, he resumes the game after calling "Play". We here try to play as many innings as possibel within the time-limit frame. That's why we also yell after each inning :" kore subi, kore baha" which means "run to take your place on the field; run to your doug-out". We want to have the kids "running" on the field as much as possible. Like when they take turn on bat, when receiving a BB, the must be constantly in motion. I personaly hate it when players wanders around to reach their playing spot on the field.

    A or B Obstruction?

I believe, from this point whatever happens, you award 1 base upon the one he legally had. So for example in your example, 1) if the runner was obstructed BEFORE reaching 1st, he will get 1st base and may advance upon his own risk to the other bases. If he is tagged out at 3rd, the out stands! 2) if the runner was obstructed AFTER reaching 1st, he will get 2nd base and may advance at his on risk to the other bases. A tagg at a 3rd or home will stay out. Now my question: BR obstructed after reaching 1st base AND there is an overtrown from F5 to F3 which falls in the doug-out. where do you place the BR?

    A or B Obstruction?

Question doesn't the rule states he get's a base upon the one he legally had already? So he already had the 2nd base. Shouldn't he been awarded the 3rd base? I believe this would be the same as on a R2 going to 3rd and then after being obstructed returns to 2nd because he couldn't have reached 3rd after being obstructed. Please help me out on this as we alays have a huge dispute on this kind of calls.
  18. When I started back in 2004 I ended up being one of the best in rules. Not nessesarly the best USING them but I knew them by heart. I started in LL and I learned the 7.13 rules like no one else. So one day there was a dispute and I not only explained the rule but sent the coach to look it up as well. (Stupid of me, even though I quoted the right one, I know). But this started like a contest between the coaches. Everytime they asked me which rule it was. And I always replied the rule number. The times something happened on the field where I was not sure of my rule, I came home and looked it up right away cause next time it will not happen to me again. Then on one occacion, there was a particular coach I didn't like at all. Always questioning every umpire. And he asked my the rule number. I answered very politely and almost wisely "coach, isn't it time you started to learn your rules before entering the field? This will be the very last time I will quote a rule for any of you. Please look 15.2 A to S." Thank God he didn't have a rule book with him as it clearly showed afterwards he was not aware of any rules in the book. At the end of the game, the coach came to me and laughing said "you got me". But then, my CU called me aside and said. Please NEVER EVER do something like that again. It could have caused you your credibility as an umpire. I've learned my lesson. Whenever they want to know the rule number after I explained the rule, I will direct them to see me after the game if still needed. They almost never come back. And the ones who does, for me it means they really want to understand the rule better. And I feel to help them where I can. Nowadays it almost means nothing to me, when a coach ask me to explain a rule or situation. It means a greater deal for me, if/when an experienced umpire ask me for a rule interpretation. Eighter he is testing me, wants to learn me something or he is admiring my rule knowledge.
  19. That was my initial thought as well.... The only one who screwed up, in my opinion, was the cather.
  20. Myself just got a game yesterday LL wich went to 9 innings, because they play by the rule: no time-limmit, no black-out, no nockout, no nothing! So the teams were 5-5 since the 5th inning and somehow WE umpires did not let eighter team score any run to end the game. The game started at 09.00 and I left the field around 12.15. There were all kind of strange plays going on at that game, like f.e. bases loaded, 1 out, pop-fly pitcher who caught the ball and put it down next to him on the mound and started running towards his dougout..... and WE were the ones that F*****-up the game... Fielders yelling that we should have called obstruction/interference because he was THINKING of trowing but the runner obstructed him from doing so... When murphy's law hits the fence..... ALL Murphys all loose... lol.

    New Umpires

Here it's done in a combination. The new guy will be placed first in the outfield. While all the other umpires are older (or experienced) once. Then they will be placed at bases for a game or two after which they will be placed at home. There will always be 1 or 2 trainer looking the game. The ones on the field will talk to you inbetween the innings and after the game everybody heads-up to the changing room and will analyze the game. When your tainer believes your fitt for it, you will get your first game behind the plate. And within short.... you will be calling solo games.
