I believe so. The Honig's frame is not as light as the diamond but IMO it is more sturdy. Not sure what the actual weight is on the Honig's but its not heavy. I got mine at the beginning of this season I work upper level varsity and NAIA and JUCO in the DFW area and have been very pleased. I got really drilled one time in an NAIA game the kid was throwing in the mid 80's and i got hit square, without a mask it would have hit me right between the eyes. I was momentarily stunned but for taking such a square shot I was very pleased. I love it. It looks good feels good and i trust it. All that being said my treasure may be trash to you. Last night in the TOP of the 7th home team is leading 4-3 with no outs and the tying run on second. I am the U1/BU whatever you prefer. After a failed sacrafice attempt the catcher (with a cannon strapped on his right shoulder) attempted to back pick R1 at second base. The throw is slightly to the first base side of the bag. The shortstop drops to both knees in front of the bag directly in the runners path allowing no access to the base. He did not yet have the ball. Easy obstruction call. This was my mechanic. I let the throw close me into a good set position to make the call as the runner slid into the fielder I pointed at the play and said "that is obstruction" followed by a safe mechanic in line with "he is safe". I really felt like i was on TOP of it and have no doubt that I got it right. However, home team coach apparently thought I had called him out and then safe. He came out (which I totally expected it was a close important play at a crucial moment in the game) after my explanation of what I had he really didn't have a problem but it had appeared to him that I had called him out when I called the obstruction. Is this a bad mechanic? It was a banger and there was no time or point for a delay dead ball signal. Should I have maybe signaled and verbalized safe prior to the obstruction?

I purchased one of these and even though the list price was cheeper at smiteez with shipping it was actually cheaper for me at purchase officials. For a good price cheaper than the majestic this is a great jacket I love it.

looking from the stands like this its hard to tell but as BT_Blue said he dumped him right away. That being said I can't disagree with what he saw plus you can tell that both umpires atleast have a clue as they try to handle the chaos of the aftermath as best they can.

But this is an absolute circus. This has just become a real headache for players, coaches and umpires. IMHO there is a simple one word solution. "wood"

I usually never talk about things like this in my plate meeting but being that I had just viewed the email myself right before I left for the game I meantioned it. Both coaches had already taken care of their business and removed them from their bags.

To me umpire marketing says "hey look at me" personally I don't think that is what umpiring is about. No one should get into umpiring for the glory.

Do you guys know how these independent leagues like this get their umpires? Do they use only guys that have been to pro school or what? Just curious.

We all have our own routine but what new guys really need to get from this is get a routine and use to stay consistent. In all aspects of umpiring consistency is what coaches, players and fans want.

Good advice about base umpire location during a pitching change. I too have learned something. Though what about the PU? I'm thinking he should move up one of the foul lines but he should also make sure that he's in front of the dugout of the team in the field. That way he won't have to listen to any chirping form the team that is at bat. Or should he remain behind home plate during the warm up throws? On any mound visit as the PU you need to have a routine that you do for every visit that way if you have to go get the coach off the mound no one can accuse you of giving one team more time on a visit than the other. Mine is this. After I grant the coach time I stand near the plate until he reaches the mound, at that time I turn my back to the infield and brush the plate (even if it is spotless) after I clean the plate I remove my lineup cards from my pocket and move up the line of the defensive teams dugout. If at this time the coach is still on the mound I will head that way making sure to come around the side or front of the coach. (never approach a coach from behind) When I reach the mound I make sure to get to the TOP so that I am above the coach and he is not talking down to me. I simply ask the coach "Coach are we keeping him or are we changing him?" (in reference to the pitcher) Don't let him change the subject to something else just keep him on topic of the pitching change. If he doesn't change him a mark a mound visit on the lineup care (which I already have out) and stay on the mound until the conference is broken up and then hustle back to the plate. If he does make a change he may do so before I get to the mound in this case I am already on his foul line so I will meet him there and get his changes, record them on my lineup card and try to take a pitch from each side of the plate with the new pitcher. During the change BU should be counting warm up pitches to let me know how many are left after I have recorded the changes and looked at two pitches, If there are still pitches left I will just stay close to the dirt at the plate.
