Semperdog Posted January 29 Report Posted January 29 Hello! I have been considering getting an EIN from the IRS to use on Game Vouchers instead of providing my SSN. What precipitated this thought was that I had an instance of non payment from a District, and was informed that my completed voucher had never made it the Business Office for payment. I inquired as to what was to happen regarding whereabouts of my personal information and received no reply. As this is beginning of my second year of umpiring, I want to find a process that is safer and seamless. Is using an EIN something you do? If so, what was the process used for getting the EIN through the IRS and actually using it with the Business Office to get paid? 1 Quote
Umpire in Chief Posted January 29 Report Posted January 29 First I think this is a great idea! I do not believe it is hard to get an EIN, I actually have one for U-E. Now it was 18 years ago, but I just applied online and got it immediately if I remember correctly. From there you will want to provide those who pay you a completed W-9 to use for payment. Now the flip side. This puts you on the radar for cities/states/municipalities to tax you and create additional burdens on you. Many years ago a city not far from me got lists of people who claimed non W-2 earnings on their taxes, then fined them for not having a business license and such. I found out about it from multiple sports officials that this happened to and this was just using their SSN. So I'd say do some research and see what obligations this may bring for you. Quote
noumpere Posted January 30 Report Posted January 30 Good article in RefMag in the past couple of months on this topic. The author suggests an EIN. Quote
