I have always wondered why y'all have such an infatuation with getting an abandonment call . . . So I went and got me one.

R3, 1 out.  Line drive over F4's head, F9 moving in and towards second base to make a diving attempt.  I turn and hustle to get a good look, and the ball gets a slight skip (and thud) on the turf.  I'm giving a fast and emphatic SAFE signal.  F9 fires to third base to try to double up the runner who is moving back.  F5 makes no tag, so we have a safe there.  Then I pivot with the throw to first base where we have . . . no runner.  I look at second . . . no runner.  He had gone back to the dugout.

I call time and get with my partner just to make sure we have all the moving pieces correct.

No catch (safe).

No tag at third base and no leaving early with no catch (safe).

Abandonment at first base (out).

So.  I got an abandonment.  Yay me.

If the throw went to 1B why not call the out? There is no abandonment prior to touching 1B but interps allow us to call it as desertion. At one time abandonment removed the force on other runners but the MLBUM changed that.

He had touched first base . . . and must have thought F9 caught it.  (And no, neither team was using an adult first base coach, so . . . )

I'm assuming the defense thought they had to make a play or appeal on him for taking off to search for nachos.

Thank goodness.

I just had a flash of a coach screaming at a 9yr old to run into the dugout since it was closer than 1B.
