In a recent game in Baltimore the ball hit resulted in part of the hide coming off.  The ball landed in foul territory.  BUT if it landed in fare territory and the catcher tried but couldn't throw it to 1st how would that play be ruled?

OBR 3.01 Comment - basically play on until the play is over then replace the ball.

About 10 years ago Maldonado hit half the cover off the ball on a grounder to F5.  F5 fielded the ball and threw to F3.  The ball barely made it there, infield single!

Of course, Roy Hobbs hit the cover off the ball in The Natural and got a triple !!!
