I was at that game last night, about five rows back of the plate. Didn't seem like it hit him very hard when you actually saw it. I was slightly concerned when he didn't open his eyes, but when he was on the stretcher , he was awake and talking. I just hope that there isn't any serious damage.

The 2 injuries to Kerwin Danley and the injury to Hickox and the majority of other injuries to umpires are just a not too subtle reminder of what we do out there can be quite dangerous. And there is nothing that they could/should have done to prevent the injuries.

Lots of times, in umpire website discussions, we get into gear choices and protection level squabbles.....is this ok for LL HS Legion...etc.....in this case no gear could protect him ( gosh its been a few rough years for ol Kerwin hasnt it?)....but it does bring to light just how dangerous our avocation can be.....and why it is so imperative that we take every precaution necessary to be safe......
