What happens in the event that an outfielder (or any player) throws a ball to any base on a force play, the baseman misses the ball, however the ball still makes contact with the base before the runner? Is this a force out or is the runner safe? now that im writing it, it seems like a dumb question, but i have no clue and have been puzzled for quite a while.

The base has to be tagged by a fielder holding the ball in hand or glove.
