Borrowing players

My son's team is playing in their in house tournament.  The team we are facing will be short a player, so they are borrowing a 10 year old girl...who does not play little league baseball.  She plays little league softball.  We've had to borrow players and have had to borrow from the younger (pee wee) division.  There were times when we were not able to borrow players and had to forfeit.

One of the members of our board said that we should protest the game after the first pitch.  It's playoffs and there is no way she should be playing since she's not a part of our league.

Does anyone know if this is in fact an illegal sub or is she legal to play?

It's a league-specific rule.  You'd have to ask them.  I would hope that BOTH coaches would approach the league BEFORE the game to get this ironed out, but that happens all too rarely.

Is the LL Softball part of your LL program? Is this player on the player agents list of pool players? If completely outside, I would talk to the BOD as the manager/coach prior to the game as mentioned before. They should not be bringing kids from outside the program to fill out the roster just for a in-house playoff game.

They are part of the same program as far as I know.  But I have never seen a team borrow from softball.  When we borrowed players, we got in contact with the player agent and he gave us a list of boys that agreed to play up if needed.  That is the list that should be used, and if those boys were unavailable, then they would ask other boys if they would like to play up.    She is not on the list of players to be borrowed.  She's 10, the list of borrowed players are 7-9 typically.

This is much more of a player agent question than a LL rules question... however, if she is in the same LL program, regardless of SB or BB, she may be eligible for use. I would recommend that the first place to check would be your leagues player agent and then the website. Check under your documents section and then find the local rules. Normally your charter documents reside there as well as procedural and local rules. Depending on what is in your local rules will provide, hopefully the legit answer. Also her current age is not the determining factor, but her league age which is determined by what age she was on a specific date.

Now as for the LL International Tournament? This most likely would not fly...

I've checked our website. It's lacking that information.  I contacted a member of the board, and he said told us to protest after the first pitch.  Said it would be unpopular but that's what he recommended doing.  One, because she's not part of our league, two, it's a conflict of interest since her grandfather is on the board and inserting a player who (1,) isn't on the list of players to borrow and (2) she's not in our league.  He stressed "not in our league."

Pool players are defined in regulation V(c).  The rule specifies pool players must be from the same "division" as the game.  The player agent assigns the pool players; the manager does not select from a list.

I encourage you to try to work this out before the game.  Is it really fun to win by forfeit?

You can always contact the district administrator and explain what is happening.

Be prepared to take SH*# from people for preventing her from playing - right or wrong, it will happen

 

I hope the other team can find a player and the kids get to play the game.

My inquiry led to the coach getting a phone call letting him know that he could not borrow her.  He was able to find another player in time.  No one even knew there was an issue.
