Best guess... he got surprised by a play at the plate and got caught on the wrong side of the wedge. He needed to be, at the least, in the LH box. Even better would be as you suggested. Being in fair territory. 

However... watching the highlight (on Quick Pitch and now here) and not being able to see Sanchez's glove touch Olsen on the way by except in SUPER SLO-MO. I doubt he makes a different call live.

Not straighted lined.. just in the wrong position.. he should have come up just in front of the plate on the catchers left hip pocket.
