BR misses 1st base

FED rules. No runners, no outs.

Batter hits ground ball to F6, should have been routine play, but ball is bobbled and throw is late and in the dirt.  F3, realizing that throw is way late, comes off bag to block ball.  Batter/runner completely misses bag, and continues to run several steps past before turning right and casually returning.

Under which of the following circumstances could the defense get that runner OUT?

A. F3, with the ball, touches 1st base before B/R returns to touch.

B. F3 tags B/R before he returns to touch.

C. F3 makes verbal appeal to umpire that B/R missed bag.

B for sure.  Combine A and C and you have the other way to get the out.  I am not calling the runner out if F3 just steps on the bag without letting me know that he's appealing.  And with the ball live, a simple verbal appeal without touching the base or the runner is not valid.

I'm guessing you mean to say that, if F3 tags the BR, that's an unmistakable appeal. I'm not so sure: for me, it would depend on the context. If everyone is yelling, "Tag him! Tag him! He missed the base!" that's pretty unmistakable.

But F3 will sometimes tag the BR if he "turns to his left" or some such, which would not be a proper appeal of the missed base.

The long and short of it: an appeal is required in the OP, and may be accomplished by tagging the runner or the (missed) base. 8-2-6b

Note that a dead-ball verbal appeal will not be possible here: the ball is live and must remain live until the BR completes his baserunning responsibilities (and is standing on 1B). At that point, a dead-ball appeal should be denied. So we can't kill it, and will ignore a verbal appeal during a live ball. 8-2-6c
