I got a new (used) mask. I bought a bulk lot. It came with a make marked with +POS BB102. What can you tell me about this mask? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Back in the early 90s that was a top-of-the-line mask. I owned one. Very light and it had very light padding for the era.  Mask have evolved significantly since that mask's heyday and it would be a basic mask by today's standards. If you're looking to sell it I don't think it's worth a lot. With a decent set of pads it would be a decent mask to still umpire with.

I'm surprised Dan hasn't commented (yet), but oh well...

The +POS catalog designation of BB102 refers to the throat guard, so it could be any mask.  If it truly is a +POS, and feels metallic, the mask is either a BB69 or BB79. As @Matt noted, it is steel, either hollow-tube or ultralight solid wire. It is a far better design than its vinyl-dipped (Wilson) or double-wire (Rawlings) contemporaries. Lighter, snazzier masks have since been produced, with the flagship mask from +POS currently the ZRO-G.

Yes, this mask will perform for you very very well, provided you get (any) new pads for it. Pads should be changed out every 1-3 (depending on use) years anyway, so if you bought it from a bulk lot, best practice is to change the pads anyway. Give the frame an exam, and make sure all welds are intact, and the steel has not been deformed by a severe impact.

If, however, the mask looks and feels non-metallic, it's a +POS Composite-Resin mask, and if you don't know its ownership history, should only be used with caution.

Got any photos of it?
