OK, my mind is not thinking this morning on baseball, (curse real jobs).

The pitcher cannot go to the dirt?  what are the rules.

Haven't had this but just drawing a blank this morning on this.

If the ball is live, the pitcher without the ball cannot be On/astride the rubber (OBR), within Nine feet of the rubber (NCAA), or within Five feet (or so) of the rubber (FED).

If the ball is dead, don't make it live unless F1 has the ball (not a balk).

Just to clarify, the above applies when the defense is attempting the hidden ball trick. Actually codified in NCAA and by interp in the other codes.

And if you inadvertently do make it live, it's not a balk either.  It's nothing, just get the ball back to the pitcher and start over.

There's no such thing as inadvertently making it live, which would imply that it was actually, if mistakenly, live.

This would be giving the appearance of making it live, when in fact it wasn't. ;)

It's not a grammar contest.  Guys who read this know what it means.

If an umpire points the ball in play...even w/o the conditions met (which not all of our brethren know) then it's live (even if it's not supposed to be)...the players will react as though it's live action etc...
