I got an email about two weeks ago from someone high up in my association inviting anyone and everyone in the association to attend a Michigan Senate Judiciary Committee hearing regarding violence upon sports officials, as an attempt to get a bill on the floor for it.

 

If you remember back, when the soccer official was killed by a player, that incident occurred in Michigan, about an hour from me.

 

I was out of town for the meeting, however I responded to the email pledging my support and including the story of the incident where I was harassed by a coach at the age of 14, when he intimidated me into changing a call. I didn't really think anything of it.

 

I received a reply shortly following the meeting, telling me that my email had been placed into the official record of the meeting, and that he would keep me updated on the status of the bill. I thought that was cool, but again didn't think anything of it.

 

Today, I received an email from a sports columnist with the Detroit Free Press requesting to interview me for a story he is writing on the topic of the bill and violence against sports officials. After about a ten minute conversation on the phone, he was amazed by how much he didn't know about what we really go through.

 

I was told to expect the article to go inside the Sunday, February 22nd copy of the Free Press! Not sure really what to expect from it, but it should be cool!

@mjr_2013  congrats on the interview and the writeup. Any kind of write up or official action towards this problem is a good thing. Hopefully the columnist will use a lot of your info. We all need to take a copy of this article to our league officials and use it as a teaching tool. This is a "COOL" thing. Thanks for sharing.
