I had this come up yesterday at a Freshmen game - Fed

R1, R2, 0 out, BU in C. Batter bunts up the first base side. F3 fields the ball and tags BR about 50 ft up the line. Who should be making the call on the tag, BU or PU?

I let BU make the call because it was past the halfway point. He tells me later that I have that call because he is in C.

It wasn't a big deal and I was a heartbeat from making the call. He waited for me and then called it. Nobody noticed but us.

What say you?

During the pregame, I'll talk about this type of situation. We always have the BU take this. I (PU) will watch for fair/foul, any type of interference and the swipe. If there would be a throw to third in this, most of my partners elect to take that play also.

I believe this could be either guys call based on who has the best view.

If the tag is on the runners front as he's running up the line the BU probably has the best view.

If it a swipe at his back as he runs by the fielder PU probably has the best view.

Remember it's nothing until you call it. Glance at your partner and know who is going to make the call so you don't make a double call. I seems like thats what you did.

If the tag is made before the BR gets to the 45, it's the PU's call. Tag after the 45 should go to the BU.

The plate umps could have the call if it were Little League on a 60'. He would see the tag better. But, he shall not get too far away from the plate with runners on, especially with a runner on second.

If you are on a 90' I would say that the base ump shall give it a whirl. If either one sees it, call it like you should an infield fly. (call it when it is clear and when you see it.) Be sure of a tag.
