While watching the BOS-NYY game tonite I see a round dirt circle about 30 - 40 feet up the 3B and 1B line about 10 feet from the lines. Obviously the on deck circles except no one ever occupies them. Which is good because it would be a problem. The only geometric reference to the on deck circle that I can find in OBR is 37 feet on what looks like a perpendicular to the 2B HP line but no actual angle is specified. Why are those circles there and can we put an on deck circle between the pitcher and the batter? Rhetorical question.

It sounds like you are describing the fungo circles where coaches stand to hit practice balls to fielders, not the on deck circles.

That makes sense. They do not want to tear up the grass. The on deck batters are on the dirt track where there is no circle but they know where to stand. Haven't seen them an any other field

In that same vein, Fenway has like dirt cutouts for the U1 and U3 umpires as well as dirt first and third base coach's boxes.

I have seen the same circles for the coaches at MiLB stadiums.
