Feeling crappy

So it's 8:00 pm on Friday night and I have a temperature of 101, body aches and a sore throat.  I am also scheduled for 5 games tomorrow starting at 8:30.  I usually get over stuff pretty quick.  Has anyone on here umpired in this kind of condition?

Debating whether to call my assignor or wait until I see how I feel in the morning.

I'm scheduled for 5 games on Saturday and 6 on Sunday.  If I call my assignor he'll probably just take all my games from me.  So I lose over $400.  There have been plenty of times (not when I was umpiring the next day) that I felt like this at night and then felt much better in the morning.

As an assigner, yes, I'd probably pull all of your games over the weekend.

 

As an umpire who worked while sick a couple summers ago and then spent the next night in the emergency room with pneumonia...losing $400 isn't the worst thing that could happen to you.

If you crater in in game # 2 and drop out your assigner will be upset.

This sounds exactly like what I had last week. If you get over it like I did, you might be fine for games later in the day. When did it start? I felt quite good the next day. I had to cancel my game that night. I had some medicine that worked really well. It was Tylenol cold multi-symptom. I hope you feel better soon.

I worked 2 JUCO doubleheaders over a weekend back in early march feeling like crap. I know I didn't work at my best, didn't give the teams a good day either day. I should've stayed home, so my advice for you is to stay home. You'll feel much better knowing that someone is out there working and able to give it 100% than you will next week after working them yourself at subpar. My

Do you to school and teach when you're ill?

All three of my sons are grown men, but when they were kids playing ball I'd like to think that the adults umpiring their games had sense enough to not work around them when they're sick.

This is a sore subject with me. I work in an office and we constantly have morons show up to work as sick as hell. They hack, sneeze, wheeze, cough, and sputter all damned day, refusing to go home or miss a day. All because they cant "afford" to miss. Next thing you know everyone in the office gets sick. It really chaps my butt...

So, my answer is no, Scott. I haven't worked games in your condition. I have the courtesy to stay home and nit expose others.

Stayed home.  Woke up and temp was still 101.  Assignor was cool and told me to let him know about tomorrow.  So hopefully I'll still get those games.

If you have been reliable in the past, then I'm sure your assignor will understand. If he doesn't, then I would question whether or not to trust that person. If an assignor doesn't trust you when you say you are in ill health, how could you trust that person with anything umpire related. Stay home, drink fluids, see a doctor, and take care of yourself. We all love umpiring but it's not worth putting your health at risk.
