How about this for a "double" play?

Just happened in the Cardinals-Marlins game.

 

R1 and R2

BR attemps a bunt and F2 gathers it in right on top of the plate. He tags BR and Plate Ump signals out. He then throws down to 3rd where F5 tags BASE and then throws over to first. (thinking it's a force at 3rd and not knowing BR was tagged out)

 

When the dust had settled, the Cardinals end up with 2 outs. How is that possible?

 

R2 thinks he's forced out at 3rd and keeps on going right into his dugout and is called out for abandonment.

 

First time I've seen that.

He called the out, but his actions could have been because of PU's mechanics.

I saw the clip this morning and PU did everything he could to communicate what he had. In a loud MLB stadium, it is likely that they didn't hear him verbalize the out.

Okay, but you'd think the third base ump would have seen him signal the out on the tag at the very least. We talk all the time about plays that should be fixed when one of the crew puts a team at a distinct disadvantage. This one sounds like it met that criteria.

Except when I saw the video, F2 didn't tag the BR with the ball, but with an empty glove. So, the force at 3b and the out at 1b looked to me like a legitimate double play.

Whether he tagged him or not, the Plate Ump hammered him out.  That's all the REALLY matters.

I was at the game live in the 1B lodge second level and could see the PU point at the BR several times while pumping his fist. The throw to F5 w/ no tag and BU3 signaled and "out" so R3 kept running toward the dugout. The throw to F3 and BU1 signaled another out. Marlins manager came out to argue, went back quietly. I do not think they realized what happened, he was clearly aruguing that it should be a Foul ball.

It also appeared that R2 never even stepped on 3rd. He just assumed it was a force and ran right by 3rd into the dugout without touching the bag.

I visit frequent, I work in Tennessee. I was there for the VP fair and the 4th.
