Injury time out

12U game working alone using OBR.  Hard grounder to F5 that eats him up from a bad bounce.  He knocks the ball down but can't make a play.  He takes his glove off and is holding his wrist.  BR stopped at 1st and isn't advancing. Play relaxes.  DC requests and I grant time so that he can attend to his player.  I take the opportunity to clean the plate. When I turn around I see the DC showing F5 where to play at the cutout.  I tell the coach to stop as there is no coaching while attending to an injured player.  I know that I should haven't turned my back on the situation, so lesson learned there.  But my question is what if any penalty can be assessed.  In the case of a pitcher, it would have been a mound conference.  But what about an injury visit to another fielder?

On an injury T.O., always stay at the injured player to ensure the integrity of the "Visit"....

 

Also, any defensive conference counts.

 It doesn't have to be the pitcher for a charged conference. Anytime the DC calls time to talk to any player, it's a charged conference, except as you mentioned for injury or grounds keeping issues ect... In this case, always monitor the conversation close enough to hear what is being said. If they start talking situations tell him to stop or you will have to charge a trip.

You can absolutely charge a conference if the coach starts giving instruction.  They're called "defensive conferences," not "mound visits."  The coach is there to tend to his injured player, not show him how he should have fielded the ball.

I had a coach really riding his F1 once from the dugout.... (It was his son).

Somewhere around the 2nd inning, the F1 calls Time and walks over to the fence and yells at dad "Stop talking to me!!" and walks back to the mound.

I look over at the dugout and say "Eric, that's a visit".  He just shook his head.

Had to bite my lip I was laughing to myself so hard!!

A defensive conference is nothing unless it involves the pitcher. If the pitcher is involved either directly or indirectly then it is a trip to the mound.

Under OBR rules, a "visit" is only charged when the coach talks to a defensive player other than the pitcher if that player then goes and talks to the pitcher.

Think he could still threaten a trip. Just not go through with it. Especially at this age most of these coaches will take the umpire's instructions as gospel.

Sadly in the OP, he didn't go with the coach so any kind of threat is pretty much not there.

I was not aware of this under OBR but the reason is that the only OBR based baseball I work is LL. In LL., a visit with any defensive player will get charged. I wanted to express that since a lot of guys on here do work LL.

carolina is correct about the LL rule - if you go strictly by the book.

 

But if a player is injured and as part of checking him out you tell him how to position himself to reduce the chances  of hurting himself next time I'd be hard pressed to even consider charging a visit.
