Second base umpire James Hoye calls out R1 following a pick at first and subsequent rundown.  The mechanic he uses (fielder off the base) clearly communicates to everyone why R1 was out.  Is this what others (you) use?  In the past when calling this, I have pointed at the runner, given the out mechanic while announcing "out of baseline."

Quite honestly, I don't know what the proper mechanic is for this call.

It is not against the rules to be out of the baseline.  Ever.  This runner was called out for being out of the basePATH. There's a difference.

It also looks like he was tagged anyway, but either way, an interesting mechanic that I had never seen before.

Speaking of which, Rule 7.08(a)(1) was changed from baseline to base path to make the distinction of a constant physical line between two bases ("baseline") vs the variable path between runner and base ("base path"). Unfortunately, the index was not updated and still reads "leaves baseline to avoid tag" even though the rule it references specifies "base path."

If you really want to get technical he was called out for being out of HIS basepath.

Carolina, in the literally thousands and thousands of games I have witnessed since I was a yonker (Big Jake reference), I have never seen it called with this mechanic.  I have seen a few vids at the pro level of this being called, but not with this "sweeping" mechanic.  Like I said, I like it as it communicates very well as to why the out call was made.
