I had a play at the plate tonight, pretty much a no brainer. Catcher gets the ball, drops in front of the plate and the runner slides into him. The manager talks to my partner, then comes to me. He says he was checking to see if he had anything he could give but the BU told him it was all me. I told him the runner never got to the plate. He says he knows but he thought he needed to come out and make a show. I told him no problem we could talk. I told him when I teach clinics I tell umpires there are certain times the managers have to come out or they aren't doing their job. I have no problem with that. We had a nice chat, I asked him if he thought we had taken long enough? He said sure and we started the next inning.

I get that coaches sometimes have to make a show.  But on a play like that?  I hope you told him to pick his spots better...

I've had coaches come out and tell me they thought I made a great call, he just needs the perception by the parents that he's sticking up for his team.

When this happens, I usually make it a point to face the field so the parents can't tell that we aren't discussing anything on importance.
