First Plate

I did my first plate of the year last night. Besides have a coin flip type zone it went fairly well. Two strange things happened. One, I had a third strike that went through the catcher. My brain locked, I let the catcher clear and I showed a safe signal.The only problem I didn't call the strike. Absolutely nobody reacted to it, the only one that saw it was my BU. I pulled my partner in and we agreed to go with a ball and carry on. After the inning the VM asked what the conference was about. He's a decent coach so I explained I screwed up and we were deciding how to fix it. 

The other involved a dead ball area at the end of the first base dugout. They were throwing to first  and threw it through the F3. It went in deadball, hit the fence and bounced out. The home coach comes out and asked why we put the runner on second. I told him it went in deadball. He says.......it hit the dugout first, it's live if it hits the dugout. I told him it didn't but it makes no difference if it then goes in a deadball area.

I had my first plate last evening.  Nothing much happened, other than me tossing my helmet like a catcher!  I was moving up the line for a foul ball and the helmet just came right out of my hand and flew behind me.  I got a WTF look from my partner.

 I had a MS game last season with a gentleman who had recently joined our association. He allegedly had 24 years of experience including JuCo ball. In the 4th inning F1 picks off R3, instigating a run-down. As I moved toward the foul line for the run-down, I glanced to see where my partner was. What I saw, I will never forget. He removed his mask, and sailed it to the fence like a Frisbee. I thought I was gonna die !

 After the game, our association Director, who had come to watch Mr. Newbie work, and I, were going over the game with my partner. Director asked why he threw his mask at the start of the run-down. His response ? " I guess it was just the catcher in me coming out...". I replied "You should probably keep that little  inside...."
