Ok, before people tell me to do a forum search, I did. There is no topic really devoted to gear maintenance in the last couple of years that deals with rust, do I thought now with the season beginning it would be a great time to bring it up...I know all about Murphy's soap and hair spay to clean and shine gear, but what I want to know is what do you guys do to prevent rust and what do you do to get rid of it when it appears.

I take great care of my stuff...I keep it clean...air dry it...the whole nine yards, but I have noticed rust in a couple of places.

1. A couple of the rivets on the inside of my Gold...near where the strap buckles in the front.

2. On the clips and rings on my Wilson Gold shin guards.

Neither of these are major, but I would like to know how to get rid of it and prevent it from happening again in the future.

Side note, does anyone know if you can send stuff back to Wilson to be reconditioned like you can with Douglas? That is certainly something that I would look into if it was available.

I look forward to your insight.

Not sure on the refurb service at Wilson..

for rust I would take a fine steel wool and "polish" the rust off the heads or use a "naval gel" to remove the rust and use a silver auto paint on the heads when clean...you could use clear also...

I have never found anything rusting on my gear.

Well mine does get used continuously throughout the year and never sits around to rust.

If you are storing your equipment during a off season I would recommend you coat all metal parts with some type of lubricant.

In thinking about it I would use Vaseline and put a good coat on the metal parts I was worried about rusting.

Just remember that when you use Steel Wool or any other abrasive, you will remove any finish or protective coating that is there and may cause more problems in the future.

I have heard using finger nail polish works as well....I am not to sure about this but I am eager to find out if this actually works!! Luckily with my shin guards are from honigs which use the hard plastic snaps!

Coca-Cola?

Remember the old story about Coke clearing away rust on certain items?

I think there is a spray substance in the auto parts stores that does a "RUSTAWAY" something or other.

I haven't tried it....don't plan to...

I treat those metal areas of my CP with a good rubbing of vaseline...not real heavy, but enough to coat them a little bit....but I have NO rust on my WVP after 8 seasons.

I do break it down and clean the heck out of it before the season starts....several times during the season....and again before storing it for the off season.

I've NEVER touched the snaps on my HSM...but as with the CP....clean, clean, clean...

Wow. Thanks for the insights. I think I will try some of those out.By the way. I finally figure that by switching to the mobile site I can reply with my iPad. That was getting frustrating.
