I am calling HS ball for the first time this year. The FED test is not until mid/late March. In NC we have scrimmages starting next week and the first regular season games are Feb. 28.

My question is, do I have to wait until I pass the exam before I can get assigned to regular season games? Or is it at the discretion of my assignor?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but this is the first time I have worked at this level.

My association starts assigning as soon as the schedules are given to the assigner. For us, it is before the test is given. Check with the higher-ups in your area.

Bikerider, I work for Midstate out of Asheboro chances are you will be assigned games. It has never made sense to me. You work games before the test, take the test, fail it and then can't work. By the time you take the test you will have made a couple of hundred bucks easy!

I was told once that the reason for it is that most associations have people that drop out after a game or to because they couldn't hack it so they wait for the drop-outs to go before the test is given.

The way I understand the NCHSAA is that you need to score above a certain level to do any level HS game, above another level to do varsity, and another level to do post-season. Don't quote me but I think the levels break at 50%, 70% & 90%. UMP81 probably would know better than me. But the exam is self paced, open book and online you shouldn't have any problems.

My concern is less with passing the test, it's more with whether I will get any games the first 3-4 weeks of the season before the test is administered since I did not take it last year.

:meditation: Bikerider, take a chill pill. Don't sweat the small stuff. Remember this is your 1st year doing varsity. Don't worry about it. Just work whatever you get and everything will workout.:yippie:

In our association you have to complete and turn in your study guide on Feb 14th.

You have to take the CIF Online exam by Feb 14th.

The Certification test will be given during the Feb 14th meeting.

Nice way for them to ensure people show up to Valentine' Night meeting.

I have completed both Study Guide and Online CIF Test.

Scored a 92 and have no idea what I missed since they don't tell you. :WTF

That score is sent to our Instructional Chair.

Games for March were already assigned, but if you fail, you will have your games pulled.

Similar here Semper - I'm in the OC high school unit. We have to complete the online CIF test by Feb 28th (I got a 95 :D ) and as a first year guy, I have already been assigned 4 games plus my scrimmage on the 26th). We don't take the final exam until April 11th! I have completed the study guide and highlighted each section in my rule book that had a question. I am also reading the "Rules by Topic" book cover to cover which is a great resource.

Bikerider..

The scrimmage will be an opportunity for your assignor to watch you work and determine which level you will begin the season. Listen to the veteran officials, study the rule book, and read the posts online. As you improve, so will your position within the association where you work. That will lead to more and better games. Good luck.
