I will elaberate a little more tomorrow.

Short version, after throwing coaches out in back to back games the tourney director calls me and my partner in the office to tell us coaches pay to much and drive to far. So cut them some slack or they wont come back.

Our responce, we drive just as far and are not paid to take abuse. Basically you got the wrong guys if your looking for umps to take SH*#.

Good answer. I would also let him know that it's not up to the umpire whether a coach wants to stay in a game or not, that burden lies totally with the coaches. So basically he was talking to the wrong people.

Posted

You could also go with a more measured response like "I will be more than happy to give the coaches more slack, just as soon as they start giving me and my partner some"

TD is retarded. For every team that thinks the "umpires suck" and don't want to come back, two more teams get in the tourney.

I can't say I've gotten this from any TD, but once had a UIC who cared too much about how much the teams paid $$ to get into the tournament, so if we wanted to work games, we needed to keep them in the game. :big_no He was eventually set straight that how much the teams pay is NONE of our concern, and that they need to play by the rules, regardless.

HS Assoc I called with last season asked this of us. All inner-city schools with barely enough players and ofte 1 coach. EJ HC and game is over. We were to restrict before EJ. I half ass see the logic, but I will not take s**t just because the douchebag is flying solo.

Teams were paying a pretty good price for this one. We later found out though that they are a lot of teams on the waiting list, so basically i think it was his way of saying im tired of having to listen to these coaches bitch. Yeah, welcome to my world.

If you only knew how much slack i had given these guys. As a matter of fact, my partner tells me im way to easy and need to start dumping them sooner.

all games fed rules, 13U,

Game #1 2-0 4th. Strike 3 swinging, catcher drops ball. Runner starts down first and as catcher says inside the runner darts to the inside into the grass. Ball hits him square in the back. Im coming down first and point, say batters out. Im not 100% my mechanics on what to say there was correct but everyone understood that i called the batter/runner out. As i go back i see him still on first and at this point my partner is telling him hes out.

Ok here comes the cheese eater from his box across the field. At first he was quiet, asked what i called. I told him he ca,e out of the runners lane when he heard inside and got hit with the ball so he was out. Immediatley he went nuts amd started screaming, " omg are you serious? This isnt back yard baseball, you cant throw at someone and get them out" now he straddles the line " hes got 3 feet to either side of this line he wamts to run, you need to learn the rules. "

I now tell him i dunno where he got that from but hes wrong and im not sure what hes even arguing

He starts again screaming about three feet to either side and i need to read a rule book. So i say coach the call has been made, i explained the rule, were gonna play on. I go behind the plate and now hes standing between the mound and plate in the grass screaming your terrible learn the rules. Seeeeeeeya!

So he goes to td, complaining. They said they showed him the rule and he calmed dowm. But we passed him later and he dropped his head.

Sidenote: very next 2 batters hit solo shots. Then they lose on a walkoff hr in the 7th. As were leaving a dad says pretty big run you guys took away. No responce from us.

Second game 2nd inn score 1-0 red team

Im in c, check swing my partner says he held. Catcher ask for appeal, my partner tells him hes got the better angle and no way i could tell with a right handed batter. Ok no problems.

Now its going into the 7th its now 2-1 blue and a guy with an ipad comes out and starts on my partner. he brings up the check swing from the 2nd, then he brings up a strikeout from the 4th and my partner cuts him off and tells him to go to the dugout. He says just aswer my questions, and my partner says lets play and walks toward plate. Guy follows him and at this point i cant hear but it looks heated and my partner tosses him.

Ok he goes to td complaining. We find out after the game that this was the hc. Me and my partner both thought it was a ass coach or daddy keeping stats since it was the first time we saw him. He didnt take ground rules or ever come out of dugout. My partner even said to the td if i thought he was hc i would of gave him more slack.

So its not like we were out looking to throw people, justified?

Me and my partner hate solo coaches. Normally they are the biggest asshole amd either no one will work with them or there teams so bad they are gonna be dheads from the start.

Wow. So many missed EJs.

As soon as he asked "Seriously?" Boom.

Ipad is strictly against the rules. Boom.

The guy at the plate meeting is the HC, regardless of who they list. AC comes out. Boom.

Opportunity after EJ opportunity. Chance after chance. Those DBs were BEGGING to get hooked.

Ipads are against the rules? Every team ive seen this summer is keeping stats on them.

csabo,

No, devices such as iPads are explicitly permitted under HS rules. 3-3-1i.

I was under the impression the ipad was being used as a digital rulebook. Why else would he bring it on the field?

trout,

An awful lot of the HS teams are using them for scorebooks/stat trackers - apparently, there's an app for that!

JM

A very very good app that keeps stats real time. But he thought it was a bucket ass, so obviously not a base coach. I guess he just carried it with him in his haste to get EJed?

Yeah he just had it in his hand. They keep about everything on them including total time of game. Hell i wish cheeseeaters could have access to rules that quick. I think theres even an ap for keeping track of umpire screwups haha.

There's certainly a rat for that. :crybaby2:

When he initially says he gets both sides of the line, explain to him that he is confusing that with a tag play. On a throw to first he has to be in the retaining line. This is a little wordy but about as concise as I know how to be. If he wishes to continue, tell him it is a running lane violation and it's time to play, then walk away. If he follows, dump him. If he stands there and yells at you dump him. Good job not explaining it to the fans.

First, he should come to you in C. If you aren't sure then stick with the ball. When he brings up the stuff from the 2nd and 4th, tell him the time has passed for discussions on those plays. Tell him it's time to play ball. If he tries to continue tell that's enough and walk away. Anything else makes him exit early. I would not tell the TD that he would have gotten more slack if he had realized he was the head coach. Probably if he thought he was an asst or a scorekeeper he should ask or straight tell him to go away, that assts don't get conferences. If he says that he is the manager then go to what I said originally. The slack he gave him was the manager's slack.

Both were good tosses.

Thanks for the input.

Im curious about him coming to me in c for an appeal with a right handed batter though.

not this again....sigh....

In Fed mechanics, it is not required to give a check swing appeal, and some areas teach NOT to do so if BU isn't in "A" on RHB, and never on LHB in 2 man. Apparently this is a matter of some contention. Seems it was an old standard that hasn't evolved. Very embattled debate took place in another thread.

In OBR, anytime an appeal is requested on a check swing, HP is required to grant it, regardless of BU position or which box the batter is in.

Comment: anytime HP comes to you on a CS appeal, give him what you got. Period.

CS, you gave these guys plenty of rope and then some. The TD is an asshat, especially if he's aware of these situations and wants you not to run them. Does this tournament really think that coaches should be allowed to come onto the field and make a big scene every time they disagree? These games would never end, nor would you ever have a "real umpire" working these games. That's insane.

Posted

If you are sure he went, bang the strike. If you aren't sure, ball it. Position or the handness of the batter matters not. Obviously you have a less than perfect look when inside but you do have a look. Just call what you have.

FED mechanics do not require to give a check swing appeal, but to not do so is quite rude and egotistical. The BU can see a check swing from A, B, C, or D perfectly well. The batter either offered or he didn't offer. Areas that teach not to ask for help because of the position of the BU are a bunch of douches. Ask for help when requested. Why does everyone feel the need to unnecessarily provoke these cheeseeaters?

SDS, I have joined forces with those in this camp. I checked with bigwigs and they said appeal is ok in fed BU in working area. Goes against what I was taught before, but I will definitely adapt to the times. I was merely stating facts about FED/OBR regulations on this matter.

And I was merely commenting that it looks arrogant to say "Ball, no he didn't go," like we used to be taught years ago. I have learned to welcome a strike from the BU if I missed one. Gets me closer to the end of the game! :)
