There is always that small kid in every league that has no strike zone to speak of, and has walked almost every AB of the season. How do you make it fair for the pitcher and batter so that the batter can get involved and actually play the game?

Don't try to get your point across to the umpire. Umpires HATE for coaches to tell them how to do their job. You just need to teach your kids to adjust to what the umpire is calling and hope he's consistent.

My talk on the little guys is this: Expand the zone in and out, absolutely. Up and down is a little more touch. I don't care how small a kid is, I will not call pitches in the dirt strikes. If the catcher's mitt is on the ground and the ball lands in it, it had better have had some kind of arc on it for me to call it a strike. I try to make the top of the zone the way it's defined in the rule book: midpoint between the shoulders and waist, which puts it at about the bottom of the sternum. If a kid has an exaggerated crouch. his zone will be up around the armpits.

You would be fired around here with that strike zone. Or they would send you to the softball field!
