It's time to tell it like it is, sport fans--and this is the most

wretched road trip I've seen in 20 years, and possibly the worst Durham team in half a century.

Where are the great ball players of yesteryear? Is the modern athlete a pale imitation of the great old warriors? Only Crash Davis stands out this year, begging the question, "What are these boys thinking about, 'cause it sure ain't baseball".

3 plays from my 3 games last week.......(1 varsity, 2 JV)

R1..(1 OUT)...batter strikes out, catcher drops 3rd strike....coach/bench yell run, batter off to first...catcher fires high to first....ball sails down first base line....R1 rounds bases and scores...BR ends up at second.......temporarily until told he was out....explanations now given to both coaches....

R1 and R2.....(NO OUTS)....routine ground ball turns 6-4-3 DP.....team starts running off field...R2 casually scores......defensive team told there is only 2 outs and has to return to field.........(this turned out to be the winning run)

Bases loaded....(NO outs).....high popup to second base....INF FLY declared.....F3 casually tosses ball to shortstop, R3 tags and scores easy...F6 fires ball towards home.......and into the dugout.....

What a mess...

Who'd you piss off, Stan?

I had something similar in a varsity game a couple of weeks ago. I'm PU with no outs and the bases empty. I punch out a batter on a pitch down the middle, which the catcher drops. The batter takes off and the catcher throws it to third to send it around the horn, completely oblivious to the fact that the runner is running to first. I'm just standing there trying to figure out what I screwed up when the F2's coach yells at him "Get your head in the game, you just dropped the ball!"

A perfect example of how bad baseball can make you "double check" what you're doing when umpiring !!! :smachhead:

Play one is sometimes legally done on purpose to sucker the catcher into a throw.

Play 2 is an umpire screw-up too if the runner was sent back to 3B.

You're on a rant because Vardity and JV players are messintg up and not playing like the AAA Crash Davis? I'd think that's pretty normal. Heck, I've seen some pretty stupid plays by the AA team here. Wasn't Merkle a major leaguer?

No Rich, Im not ranting.....lol.......I am usually not surprized at things that happen within sub-varsity ball over the course of a season, ...............but this was 3 pretty basic mishaps in 3 straight games...thats what made it strange......all fairly routine items...and not usual to my area of HS ball....

3rd strike not caught...

How many outs..

Infield fly being a live ball..

No umpire screw up on 2 as it states runner scored what was the winning run........

I misread 2 to include having the runner return. Still, if it was the winning run why was the D told to return to the field?

I think he said winning, not game-ending.

exactly.....I probably should have stated that that run "turned out to be the winning run".......game finished one inning later....that play ended up being the run that decided the game....

Skip: You guys. You lollygag the ball around the infield. You lollygag your way down to first. You lollygag in and out of the dugout. You know what that makes you? Larry! Larry: Lollygaggers! Skip: Lollygaggers.

Great movie.
