10U USSSA Tournament. I am PU. R1 and R2.

HT BR hits one off the hands and nubbs it toward 1B. I back up to 1BLX to watch the line and also in case R2 tries to come home.

1B picks up the ball as hes charging in and swipes at the BR. My partner in "C" doesn't make a call and points at me.... (a-la Jimmy Hughes). There has to be a call because everyone is just standing around so I yell "No Tag" and indicate SAFE.

VT coach comes out and asks me about it and I tell him "Coach, I have no tag". He says "My first baseman says he tagged him and he wouln't lie". I tell him "I'm not saying he's lying, I can only call what I see". He proceeds to tell me "You can't call what you don't see either". :smachhead: I tell him "Exactly. I didn't see a tag so I can't call a tag so the batter is safe".

Between innings my partner comes up and tells me that he was screened and couldn't see anything and that's why he pointed at me.

It was very awkward and there has to be a better way to have handled it. I understand that was my BU's call but when he wouldn'tmake a call, I had to do something!!

Thoughts all????

If BU didn't see a tag, then he has to call safe. If the coach wants to discuss it further, he can talk to your partner.

I will admit those calls are difficult from the inside. If he was truly screened, he can talk to you after the coach questions the call. You tell your partner what you see and he changes the call if it needs to be changed.

Next time your partner Points at you and wants to you make a call, point back at him and say "No It's Your Call, You make it". :hopmad:

I bet they would never do it again.

Make the call and we will discuss it later if someone objects.

Up to the running lane this is the plate umpires call anyway and after the running lane starts it becomes the base umpires call. The first post didnt say where this happened. Just like on the other getting help thread I agree the base umpire needs to make the call first if its his call and then get help if needed. And the call can be made based on the evidence in addition to what is seen.
