I was playing with my son this afternoon (3 y/o) and slammed my knee against the ground. It momenterly felt like my knee cap shifted out of place. Within an hour it began to swell up. It doesn't hurt, I have complete mobility, I can even run on it. Yet when I fully extend my leg, it looks like I have a tennis ball inside my knee. I've been icing it down and I'm planning on sleeping on it tonight to see what happens. Might have to go to the E.R. tomorrow. Do any of you guys know what I'm up against? I have games scheduled 4 of the next 5 days and I don't know what to tell my assigners. I already called off tomorrows games. Just checking to see if this has happend to any of you. Thanks!!!

IHSAUmp,

Get it checked out immediately! Many years back in the hey-day of my motocross racing days, I went out to a local track to practice for an upcoming race. HUGE mistake #1, and an associated lesson on protective gear...does no good when it's in your bag. I put on my racing pants, but due to the heat and the fact I was "only practicing" I didn't put in the knee protectors. :bang:

Well of course, while working on my blitz technique on a section of whoops, my good buddy Murphy decided to pay me one of his many visits...bike got crossed under me and when I went down, my right knee slammed into the frame. Experienced the same thing as you, except I did have pain due to the actual impact of knee on metal.

Seemed to do OK for the next couple of days. After the swelling went down some, I was swimming at a buddy's house. Got on the diving board and as I made my jump, felt a sharp twinge and pain in the same knee. By the time I got out of the pool, had similar swelling, but looked like 2 tennis balls in there and this time my knee felt wobbly.

Anyway...

Finally went to the ER and got it checked out.

I had busted open 3 of the "bursas" or fluid-filled sacs in my knee....the prepatellar, the infrapatellar and the anserine bursas; and had slightly dislocated my kneecap.

The immediate danger here is possible infection, which is very common w/ these types of injuries when these sacs bust. And in my case, the doc got on my pretty good for not coming in earlier as an infection had just started in my knee. Had to have it drained several times and put on antibiotics.

While there was no immediate impact on mobility, such as with a ligament injury, doc told me it would contribute to an arthritic condition later in life due to the fact these sacs basically lubricate your knee.

Well, later in life is here and he was 100% correct. :notworthy: When I slowly extend my leg, I can feel some roughness in there and when I stand up from sitting down for a period of time, kne- cap sometimes feels "out of track" and my knee pops like a couple of Black Cats.

DISCLAIMER: Obviously I'm no doctor and I can't speak at all for your specific injury and related diagnosis/treatment, other than it APPEARS to be similar to mine. Take it all w/ a grain of salt.

And to that end, I implore you to go see a doc ASAP...only they can truly know; and besides, a knee is a terrible thing to waste!

I injured my knee a few weeks ago. It had showered earlier in the game, I'm at 1B and come in on a base hit. Simple pivot, but my foot slipped and the knee buckled. I didn't think anything about it. In fact, the first base coach and I laughed about it. The next morning I wasn't laughing - the knee was swollen and sore.

I didn't go get my knee checked, and even called 1B a couple of days later w/ a 3 man crew. I knew I had a problem on the first hit of the game!

Long story short. I went in the next day and was set up with an MRI. I'm on day 5 of recovery for arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn medial meniscus.

I would recommend getting this checked out. It may just be a sprain that needs rest, but if something is wrong, the longer you put it off will hurt you in the long run.
