No Appeal League

We had a meeting yesterday for a new league I'm going to work beginning in a couple of weeks. For the Pony and Colt levels, there are no appeals allowed by the teams. It's all up to the Umpire. They're all one man games so my question is, when and how do I make the out call if I see a player miss the bag? Is it a delayed dead ball, or do I call him out immiediately? I'm assuming I let the play go and call him out after the ball is thrown back to the pitcher. Thanks!

You'd have to ask the league. Hopefully it's written in their rules.

With that said, I believe South Carolina is the only (or one of a very few) state with this situation for Fed ball. Someone from there could probably chime in.

Yeah, I was told that it used to be the original FED rule on appeals till about 10 yrs back. Some of the older umpires know this rule. They just never changed it in this league when the NFHS went to a proper appeal.

If they are using the old Fed rule then you wait until the play is relaxed and announce any outs for leaving early or missed bases. It is a bad rule but one we lived with in Fed for years.

Like MST I hated that rule........I did not think it is our place to assisit the defense...it is the defense's responsiblity to look for touch of bases....and execute a proper appeal...

I would ask for clarification....is it no appeals or no protests?........its one thing to back the calling umpire 100% its another to circumvent the rules of baseball... PONY and COLT level needs 2 umpires and they need to play the game within the rules which includes appeals....

I do some games for a Colt/Sr. Colt league in the area (B.G.) that has that rule as well.

I don't care for the rule, so I worked out a "compromise" with the guy who assigns for the program.

I don't call it "automatically" on any play, but if the defense "asks", then I "remember" - basically, the FED "verbal appeal" rule. I just said if he wasn't OK with that, then I wouldn't take any of his games, but if he were, then I would.
