So this is not actually a baseball official. But I thought it might still be interesting.

The link is to my hometown's newspaper police blotter.

The story is about a "fistfight" between a losing team and the game officials at a youth soccer game.

About 10 years ago I was doing a U12 game. The batter bunted the ball down the first base line. As the batter ran down the line he kicked the ball (while in fair territory). I called him out like I should have. The OC came running out and started yelling at me. I tried to explain the rule. He proceeded to punch me in the chest with both hands.

I immediately forfeited the game. Called the police. I pressed charges and took him to court.

All they did was tell him not to do it again.

From then on all the umps knew who he was and if they saw him on the field they refused to ump the game. Eventually he had to quit.

In those days coaches could get away with more. If something like that would have happened today he would probably be in jail.

It was such an obvious call that it caught me by surprise. There had been no problems at all before that.
