I have active in several of these threads and while I don't think I am the end all of the umpiring world, I do have a fair knowledge. There are a few things that are either an absolute or very nearly an absolute. Getting in position and making your own calls is certainly one. In case anyone is confused, my whole purpose of reading and contributing to the various boards I do is to further my knowlegde and to spread what I have been taught. By no means am I a,"Do it my way or leave!" guys, but there are certain things you just can't argue and trying to give a call away that is obviously your's is one. I feel I have proven over the years I have been on the internet that I am one of the even tempered fair posters around. There are some pretty knowledgable guys that will slam or belittle guys just for the sake of doing so.

If we are discussing a rule or mechanic that has options or is different level to level, I will discuss all day. But when it is a straightforward unequivital mechanic and every poster but one agrees it is a fair bet that the majority is right and I can get pretty insistant on it. If I feel the need to do something personally I will go to a PM to do it, I will not do it in the open.

If you wish to ask a question about a rule or mechanic then insist we are wrong because the local guys said so, then don't ask the question. I am the first to tell guys to call something according to the local group but when they are so obviously wrong then you need to do what PIAA said and take the knowledge that you are gaining here and educate your local group.

Amen,

We all commit to continue to learn our craft. Some things are an absolute given (Bible if you will). This being one of them, you have to be in position, and you have to make a call. I hope that Critter will take our feedback, swallow his pride, learn from it and continue to work at making himself a better umpire.

That is what I am talking about...the BU deffering to PU

There is only ONE time...A PULLED FOOT...other than that, NO OTHER TIME!!!

I am not understanding where your partner and yourself are coming from in this situation...:banghead:

Listen to the other people on this board...they know what they are talking about

no thanks not when you are being rude and telling mwe to listen to people saying two different things.

really please READ BETWEEN THE LINES

critter,

im not quite sure what else to tell you. everyone on this board has told you how it is. you may not like what we have to say, but it is the truth, and nothing but the truth.

i am not being rude, i am trying to make you understand that in this case, you and whoever else believes what you are trying to say, ARE WRONG!!!

as some other people have said, open up your eyes. you are wrong. im am not being rude (just making sure you understand that). i am telling you there is ONE TIME you can appeal to your partner (a pulled foot @ 1st). everyone on this board has told you. who are you going to listen to, your partner or everyone on this board? open your eyes, please.

i am like hokieump, i am not one to wave my resume, but i have been through two week long clinics modeled directly after Jim Evans 5 week long Acadamy, only it is in a week. I have also instructed at that same week long, with the best umpires I have ever been around. i know a thing or two about this situation, and i am flat out telling you everyone on this board is right, and you and whoever else believes it (like your partner), IS WRONG.

Listen to us. It will make you a better umpire. And if you spread the word to your partner, it will make him a better umpire. If you spread it to the rest of your area, wow, that just improved your whole area.

The problem with appealing everytime you have a question, is that it takes away from your professionalism. it makes you look weak. no umpire in the world wants to be weak.

im not quite sure what else to say, other than you are wrong here.

once again, im not trying to be rude. you may think so, but i am just trying to make you a better umpire.

Critter,

If you will take what these guys have told you and not argue with them you will be a better umpire. This is a good website with knowledgable people who are willing to help. Also remember you can learn more with your eyes and ears open and les with your mouth open. Not trying to be mean to you at all. Just take the advice and learn from them.

This does not sound like a man who is interested in learning how to be a better umpire.

we know what we are talking about (or most of us)...

I don't think I am going to get in on this. French just eliminated me from this group with this statement. :HD:

Yes, ask them after you made your call. At the time of the call, for all you know your partner could of fainted or otherwise had no look at the play at all. Make the call to the best of your ability then ask for help if you are in doubt else it starts to look like this episode of Yes, Dear

Video stealer.

Critter,

You have been told the correct thing to do. Make your calls. I even make mine if there may be a question about the pulled foot. I am going to own that until someone comes to me to question it.

I have my responsibilities and my partner has his. And, his responsibilities do not include making my calls for me. If I don't see a play fully for some reason, I am making the call. I am going to sell it.

Case in point. R2 steals 3B. BU gets in the best position possible and sees what he can see. Now, you are not going to be 5 feet from 3B to make the call. So, you get the best angle, make your call, and sell it. And, don't look at the PU to see what he has.

Again, you can take the advice to "own" your calls and let your partner call his game. Or, you can continue to take the money while your partner does all the work. I know that is easier but it isn't right.

You are an umpire out there and are being paid(hopefully) to do a job. So, do it and don't put it off on your partner. I am going to be straight forward and rude b/c you are not listening to the nice way the others are putting it.

EARN YOUR CHECK AND MAKE YOUR CALLS.
