Had the opportunity to work with a highly skilled partner last week. ( Unlike many of my games). It began with the pre-game we had. We covered everything in short order. His command of the plate meeting set the tone for the game. As I take my position, I realize how relaxed I am. In the 2nd inning, a gapper to right center is a sure triple and I am busting to get to "C", when I hear' "Jack, I've got third!!". Between innings, he tells me it's too hot for you to be busting all night, I've got your back. Though it is the only way I know, it was a pleasure to hear. We are exactly on the same page with IFF and timimg plays. Several bangers on the bases and my positioning and timing is GREATLY improved. So much so that there is little or no chirping. We post game and I thank him. His reply is I'll work with you anytime. Whether it was extra confidence or terror at screwing up (or both), it was rewarding to say the least.

That's great. I know I am always a lot more relaxed when I have a good partner.

There are several guys I can walk on the field with, without doing a pre-game (not that we don't), not give any signals, (not that we don't) and we know what each other is thinking and doing.

When doing games with them it is so easy and enjoyable.

As they say down under "No Worries Mate".

It has been said about athletic competition that you will rise to the level of your competitors. I think the same holds true with officiating. Your performance will match that of the person you work with, (and as a caveat - somewhat the caliber of the players on the field) Case in point - the game i worked last night. My partner was great, the quality of play was below par. (Jr BR) consequently I found myself really having to concentrate to stay focused on game.

Another thought - Umpiring and marriage, have a lot in common. A great partner makes all the difference. ;)
