im asking specifically about asa softball (is that okay to do on this borad?) - but would also like the answer for baseball and any specific rule sets if applicable and if you know...

runner on 2nd...ground ball to shortstop...SS throws to 1st and the ball deflects off of the 1st basemans glove and goes out of play...how do you place the runners?

and, generally, when judging the time of release (or throw), does it matter if another fielder contacts the ball before it goes out of play...lets say the situation was different andf it was a throw from the outfield following a base hit....i'm placing the runners based on the last base attained at the time of release, right? but iof the throw hits an infielder on its way out, is THAT the time of release?

I will answer specifically for baseball but I think it's the same in both. In the OP it is the first play by an infielder so the runners get two bases TOP(time of pitch). Second play by an infielder or any throw by an outfielder is TOT(time of throw). Any throw or pitch from the rubber is one base. Any ball unintentionally carried into dead ball is one base no matter if it's an infielder or outfielder.

I'm sure this will cause more questions so ask away if needed. Also, Larry or somebody can fill in the softball side if it differs.

The only time a player touching it after the throw is when the umpires rules the touch was the cause of it going in DB. That happens usually two ways, either the ballstops and then is kicked or a player slides into it and changes it's direction. Either way it is the touch or kick which causes the ball to leave field. In your OP the throw deflected off the player and went out of play. The energy of the throw itself is the cause of the deadball.

I don't have my ASA book with me, but I believe what Mike has stated for baseball is the same for fast pitch softball. I don't do slow pitch and tend to gloss over those sections.

ASA Rule 8.5.G When the ball is live and is overthrown or is blocked:

EFFECT: All runners shall be awarded two bases. The award shall be governed by the position of the runners when the ball left the fielder's hand...

There is no first throw mentioned. There is no TOP. There is no difference between SP and FP.

The pitch is a one base award.

8.5.J covers the catch and carry for one base.
