The new generation of bases is made of some sort of plastic or rubber.

Situation, BR headed to 1B, takes "the stride" to try and beat the throw, foot hits the base, slides across the surface and the kid goes down in an awkward position - sometimes even getting injured.

Is it just me, or has anybody else seen an uptick in this sort of thing since LL made "safety" bases mandatory?

I can't stand the ones that have the 8" square extension that goes in the sleeve. You spend half the time on the field digging dirt out of the sleeves.

When I was younger.....

We played on canvas bases mounted with a steel post. The bases never came off and I can't remember a single person getting hurt. I believe they solved a non-issue with these safety bases.

Did you know Doubleday? hehehehe

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. I grew up in the same era.

Finally, my kids used to say "Dad, you're older than dirt". I would always reply "Not true. They were making it when I was born".:agasp_:

yep-I can't remember any injuries from the canvas bags either. Methinks somebody is in cahoots with equipment manufacturers.

Oh trust me, probably some whoree(sic) lawyer (vs. a lawyer) sued because Johnny slid into a canvas bag when the tiedown wasn't put below grade. Think of how many knucklehead coaches there are out there.....

Then again, it could've been some team Mom who saw the "potential danger" either through Opra or some wacked-out magazine on kid safety and FORCED manufacturers to change. I can hear it now......"we must have ZERO injuries in baseball.......otherwise we will be forced to go to Soccer".
