Hi guys I have been umpiring for 4 years and love it. I attended the MLBUC in Long Beach in Nov and now plan on attending umpire scholl in January. I have a lot to learn and motivated to learn as much as possible. Im looking for some pre-game routines and pre-game talks you have.

Thanks

WTB

I think he's asking about the pre-game with your partner, not the plate conference.

If the former, the basics are:

a) discuss fair/foul responsibilities (include all base umpire positions)

B) discuss catch/no catch responsibilities (include all base umpire positions)

c) discuss all rotations, with: no runners on; runner on 1st only, etc... make sure to include the plate umpire rotating up to 3B when you have R1 and R2 with less than 2 out (tag up situation).

d) discuss coverage/responsibilities for when base umpire goes out

e) discuss coverage of rundowns;

f) review signals used

g) discuss check swing appeals

Depending on how often or how infrequent you've worked with a particular umpire, also discuss (if you're plate umpire) that you want them to kill a play if the base umpire sees a ball touch the batter in the box ("Foul!"); while this may seem a bit elementary, I've worked with some guys that don't remember to do this (or perhaps they didn't know they should do this).

Anything else I"m missing... ?

Oh - yeah - discuss where to go for beers after the game for a proper post-game.

Pre game with your partners about fair/foul responsibilities and who has catch, etc.

At the plate meeting you also want to make sure you ask the manager if there are any ground rules that you need to be aware of. There are many other things, but the people who posted above pretty much covered them.

Umpire in Chief, the founder of this site, wrote an article all about the plate meeting. It is a very good blog post that all members should read.

Yes, they did -- so you needn't have replied.

Look -- I know that's three "slamming" posts in a row. I'll stop. I'm just trying to get our young friend to (a) learn some netiquette and ( stop being so narcissistic.

You have the right to remain silent. Use it.

I rode you a little bit on the spelling crack but this time I agree with you. Some of these posts have been long dead and do not need to be resurrected just so someone can repeat the same info that has been posted in the last 10 pots.
