  1. I am in the PBUA and I am heading out the door now for the mechanics clinic. Also Jordan even if you are not joining the Association this season it would be a good idea to attend the Jim Evans clinic in Tigard next week, 3/6,7 and 8. He hasn't been here since '06 so I rercommend if you've got the time and $195.00 it is worth it for the world class instruction. Go here; http://www.reftown.com/Default.asp?Assoc=PBUA or pm me for more info. By the way what LL are you working with?
  2. Your first year and you are working College ball? Oh, and welcome to the board.
  3. Welcome to the board. DH's every day in Oct? I wish that was available here. Was that Adult ball?
  4. It deals with question "Why can't a machine call balls and strikes?"
  5. I listen to a lot of podcast's while I'm at work. I listen to sports and politics and fiction etc. I googled "Umpire Podcast" and found this: http://planetretcon.com/podcast/prc07.mp3 This is an enjoyable show to listen to, about 25 minutes long. It combines a little Sci Fi with... Umpiring, what a combo! If anyone knows about any real Umpire Podcasts let me know.
  6. I won't have any games till 3/16 when the HS games start. I just came home from watching a game at The University of Portland (Div 1). The weather is beautiful today. It'll probably start raining every day on around....uh, 3/16.
  7. I'm not doing anything different, I think it's just the up and down 'tween pitches when there is not anything happening. There doesn't seem to be any reason to bend over when I can just stand there and then react when I need to move.
  8. I have a related Q. I agree that you should be in HOK when making a call and at TOP when in B or C but what about when in A? We are taught to be in HOK in A at TOP but I find it a liitle bit of a strain on my back, anyone else? Or am I a wuss?
  9. I agree about being an evaluator. We have a guy in our association who is in his 70's and he goes to parts of several games a day looking at guys. He knows everyone and everyone knows him and he is an important part of the organization.

No call unless runner actually interferes. The runner can't disappear.
  11. Last season ran from 3/10-5/12. I worked 40 HS games and had 7 rained out in that time. We usually get our assignments in two-week bunches. This season starts on 3/16 and I'll probably get my first assignments a week or so before that. I did 121 games total through fallball, last game was a DH on 10/25.
  12. Oh and by the way the '64 WS is coming on at 9pm, Yanks v Cards.
  13. I don't know about Comcast. I have Direct TV and it just popped up on the menu on Jan 1, right next to the NFL network, no extra charge.
  14. I'm telling you that it is a great channel. I woke up this morning and the '69 World Series is on. It seems like they have 1/2 hour shows with WS highlights from every year. They carried all of the Caribbean Series, 12 games in 6 days, all live. They are going to show spring games, there are 3 games on on 2/25, live, and hey are going to split the WBC with ESPN. Oh, the '77 WS is coming on now.
  15. Saliently Sa"li*ent*ly, adv. In a salient manner. [1913 Webster] Salient 3. Hence, figuratively, forcing itself on the attention; prominent; conspicuous; noticeable. [1913 Webster] Saline Sa"line (? or ?; 277), n. [Cf. F. saline. See {Saline}, a.] A salt spring; a place where salt water is collected in the earth. [1913 Webster]
  16. The game was on the new MLB Network, which is a TV channel. I am watching the 1954 World Series right now. You can see if the channel is available in your area here: http://mlb.mlb.com/network/
  17. uhh...what? When In Doubt Act Certain
  18. I was watching the same show but didn't notice this play. I can't follow your description easily. If the runner was stealing 2nd and ran past the bag then yes I think he would be in jeopardy of being put out. I would love to see the part of the ump grabbing a runner in a live ball sit.
  19. What the h%^L is "gout"?
  20. Greetings. I have lived in Portland Or since '91 but I grew up in Northport NY. What part of LI are you in? Do you ump Northport's games? I might be moving back there in a few years, can you tell me the name of you Association?...Brian

  21. I don't have video, sorry but it was a good example of what I have since learned to call "Backswing" interference". R1 takes off to steal 2b B1 swings and misses F2 catches pitch and his glove with the ball in it is hit by the bat on the backswing F2 does not make the throw as the PU immediatly kills it, sends the runner back, and leaves the batter to finish his AB If it was ruled BI the batter would have been called out, but as a "weak" or "backswing" int he remains at bat.
  22. Hi. My name is Brian H and I am getting ready to start my 3rd year of HS ball in Portland OR.
