  2. Hey all,

I'm in the market for some new plate shoes, and am trying to research some other products, as I have been wearing the New Balance 460's since they came out and think its time for a change. I was wondering if anyone on here knows what kind of shoes Will Little is wearing? They look different, something I haven't seen before. Here are a few pictures.

    Thanks!

  3. C'mon guys, jeez. The "rook" is the one who made the call. Who else should he dump on? U2? ;)

But seriously...how some of you guys take on this "us against them" mindset is kind of fascinating. With some of you guys, the managers and coaches are always effing "rats" and the umpires are always to be defended. I've played. I've managed. I've umpired. I've worn all the hats. Hey, we umpires screw up too. This guy IMO, makes a rookie move in a critical situation and ol' Mike was just letting him know.

Taking off the umpire hat and looking at it objectively, I feel Scioscia's beef was legit. Not having the luxury of slo-mo at various angles and having to judge that swing in real time, I'd venture to say most base umpires wouldn't have had enough to overturn the PU's call. I wouldn't have. Too close. And I'd only overrule my PU if I were 100% certain he went around. On that swing, No way I would have been 100% certain. The PU called it a ball and he's a hell of a lot closer to it than U3. PU apparently saw it all the way because it wasn't until the catcher pointed down that he asked. If the PU had asked immediately we would know that he didn't have a clear view of it and expected help.

Not an Angels fan, but making that call in such an extremely critical offensive sitch for the Angels on a very borderline checkswing is definitely a "rookie" move. And Scioscia knew it. Can't blame him for sticking up for his players.

WOW! So just because it's a "critical situation" when the umpire (in this case being U3) gets asked to appeal the possible check swing on the batter by the PU (who doesn't actually have the best look on check swings)  and and in his JUDGEMENT rules it a swing, it's a rookie move...? Whether Tripp was right or wrong, thats his call to make, and as an umpire, the main focus at all levels is to ALWAYS get plays right. Now this doesn't always happen, because we are human, but we DO NOT not make a call because of the situation.

  4. Did this ump stay 1blx because it might be his call if U1 doesn't take it? He was in the right position for the play at the plate but it wasn't 3blx. With balls hit to the infield you don't get much of a choice sometimes.

Maybe. Or maybe thats where he wanted to take the play at the plate. When I mentioned 3blx, I was just making an example up. You are right, 3blx is not always the best spot, but more and more instructors are teaching PU's to take most of there plays from 3blx, but it's all up to the umpire and his judgement on where he things he can get the best look, and more of the time there won;t be just one spot, but constant little adjustments.

  5. Is the plate umpires first responsibility here the runner from third?  Not sure why the foul call isn't his.

In pro mechanics, fair/foul balls (being a bunt, or what we see in this video) are up to either the 1B umpire, or the 3B umpire when there is a runner on third base. For the reason that MObetterBlue said, so PU can get into a better spot for the play at the plate. Aside from the video, another example would be a squeeze play where the batter bunts the ball up the first base line. The 1B umpire would take the fair/foul so PU can get into the best position for the play at the plate; which would in this case would be 3blx. The PU would not be able to get into that spot, if he has to stay on the line for fair/foul. Therefore, when you have extra umpires on the field, you utilize these mechanics to give your partners the chance to be in the right spot and get the best possible look.

This mechanic is utilized in pro 3 man, and 4 man mechanics (and probably college but not 100% sure about that.)

As a side note, just in case any of you guys are curious, this mechanic is signalled usually by a paired pointer and middle finger together (refer to the picture) with a slight sideways turn in the wrist. (The hand in the picture is not my hand, got the pic from GOOGLE :))

  6. Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone had an online version of the 2012 Third Team video they could send me or something.  I have a copy of the 2014 episode, and really want to see the 2012 one, as I hear it is better!

Thank you very much in advance!

  7. Take a look at this play. Possible INT... This could generate some discussion, or some clarification on INT for some umpires. What do you guys have? On-field umpires ruled "That's nothing."

EDIT: This is now the right link to the video

  8. You really just need to find a fit that works for you. It's all preference. Up until this season, I wore my mask pretty tight, however in the offseason I was told that a looser harness can help prevent more severe head injuries due to foul balls hitting off of your mask (Just like the Davey's strap idea). I personally don't think that different harnesses have a different effect on anything, but then again, some people out there swear by things like the Davey's Strap. Also, in regards to taking your mask off, a newer harness will always give you trouble to begin with because it is stiffer, but if you work it, you should be able to remove your mask the same whether it's tight or loose. Like I said, it all comes down to personal preference, because at the end of the day, it's you that has to wear the mask every time you work the stick.
