I'm square to the corner of the base - where the play is going to be.
-
Well, I'm just going to have to chance it. F1's at the D2 level and below have proven to be unreliable in being able to throw the ball within the vicinity of the bag.
-
I've been hit twice this season with pickoff throws from F1 while in A with R1. I know I'm getting slower, but has anyone else had this happen? Granted, I like to work close to the bag (10 feet), but this is getting ridiculous! I have moved back to around 15 feet from the bag since. I've been wearing a cup on the bases for years for just this type of scenario. On the second one, R1 dove back and the ball went under him, somehow missed him completely (seriously, this is nearly impossible), and bounced up and whacked my left shin. Am I alone on this, or have others experienced this shame?

Just found out this isn't all theory for me. While none of the D2 schools, as far as I know, are using the double 1st base, and one D3 school is (but I don't have any games there this season), there is one JUCO that is going to be putting one in where I do have games. Yay me.

You left off one: No play on the BR at 1st - BR can use either bag. (Rich beat me by a few minutes). But then there's these that offer complexity for U1: Close play, BR beats it but steps on the white bag. Out with a sweeping mechanic with the right hand. Play at 1st, but BR has both feet on the ground past the base. No call. DO NOT call time. BR is out on appeal (tag runner or step on 1st with unmistakeable appeal).

Not falling for it. I'm not going to be Rickrolled.

Runner tagged out after returning from dugout to touch home
grayhawk replied to Andrew Robbins's question in Ask the Umpire
They should know that both runners scored and the BR is the only runner on base. Just take a moment to sort it out in your head and just put the defense back on the field and resume play. Unless R3 (R3 is on 3B, not R1) interfered with the play on the BR, there's really nothing to do here. -
I do the same. The last shot I took spun the mask on my head and I caught it before it hit the ground.
-
Once in 15 years.

U3k is the ONLY exception. Otherwise, the fielder must use the white base.

You owe me a ThighPro sample for that remark!

Took another shot today with my Memory Foam pads and no ill effects. It was probably around a 90mph pitch fouled back. I think on some shots, it just isn't going to matter which pads you use. Just the right velocity, at just the right angle and somehow enough energy get absorbed by your head. I'm lucky to have never gotten concussed.
-
Spot on. To add a wrinkle for the OP. If this was a declared infield fly (R1 & R2 with less than 2 outs), if the ball is fair, the batter-runner is out on the infield fly (caught or not, doesn't matter) and R1 is out for interference. If the ball was foul, then same result as above in Rich's post.
-
I can see why you say that, but I've taken more shots that I can count and never felt the frame touch me. It's the way they compress that, I believe, they absorb so much energy. OTOH, I use the Samurai Gears shovel, and I've has the attachment screws cut my chin when taking a shot off the throat guard. I covered the screws in hot glue to prevent this in the future.
-
What is the reason you don't trust them?
-
They are just regular sized pads, not bulky and don't wrap around. If I ever feel any ill effects from taking a shot with these pads, I might consider something else. Until then, not so much.
-
Wilson only makes their memory foam pads in black, but IMHO, they are superior to TW. They don't become solid blocks in the cold like TW (ask @Richvee what he does when he's driving to a game when it's cold out), and their energy absorption is flat out excellent. I had two +POS steel frames bent by shots that I didn't feel thanks to the MF pads, and I've taken countless shots with them on my Nike Ti masks with zero ill effects. Nothing is guaranteed to keep you from getting injured, but my Wilson MF pads are batting a thousand so far.

They can't play in the rest of that game (and maybe 1 or more following games depending on who and the nature of the ejection.). Compare that to a 15 yard penalty, 2 free throws or a 2 minute penalty in hockey. You take your medicine and move on, but you still get to play. The threshold does need to be higher for an ejection, so that's why game management is so crucial in baseball.

I agree it's not the best angle, but do you feel F3 "must occupy" the space he does to receive the throw? That's the only possible way this isn't obstruction, because he clearly hinders the BR before he has possession of the ball. This is going to take up a lot of time on our next zoom.
-
https://x.com/FrogPreacher/status/1893502374158754127 The call was the runner was out and there was no obstruction. Personally, I see the runner clearly slowing down before F3 was in possession of the ball. He also didn't need to occupy that space to field the throw and was blocking BOTH bases. IMO, this should have been obstruction and the BR awarded 1st. What say you?

Not in my specific example. You know why? Because college football players don't spike the ball! They KNOW what will happen when they do. This is why baseball is, BY FAR, the most difficult sport to manage. We don't have a 15 yard penalty, a technical foul, or a penalty box to enforce sportsmanship. All we have are warnings and ejections. Other sports have traffic tickets and all we have is the death penalty.

I wonder if the umpires that allowed the HBT will get "dinged" for post season. One of them was a WS umpire last season so he might not be up for it again this year anyway, but will it prevent him from getting a regional or super? I would hope something like this wouldn't be the overriding factor if he has an otherwise superb season. Not sure why you're linking the video of Manny doing exactly what is expected of him by instructing the batter to get moving. The "uproar" on X on this is so F*#King ridiculous, I just can't even. Complete morons that have no clue how the college game is different from MLB. Would people that complain about this have a problem if a college football player spiked the ball after a touchdown and got a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty? "Come on Ref! You're just making it all about YOU! Let the kids have some fun!" SMMFH

My dad had that surgery when he was 83 and it helped him a lot.

Officially starting my little league umpire journey tomorrow

I'm answering for working inside on games where leading off is allowed. You are in C because there could be a pickoff attempt at third, and calling that from B is sketchy at best. Yes, the most likely play is the putout attempt at first (not a force, but that's for another day), and while you start off in C, you should have plenty of time to move within the working area to gain distance for your call at first base.
