Being that I actually posted something and then having it suddenly disappear made me wonder about the new and improved website and new sponsors and/or partners. Excellent book! We can all relate to this umpires passion for the game. I definitely admire this person for his persistence at going after what he wanted in life. So many road blocks and he kept pushing through them. Too bad he didn't get a taste of the Major Leagues. He may have packed up his quest for the Majors but still went back home to his career job and still kept umpiring. He still had a great career in the Negro League and witnessed players from Satchel to Willie Mays, Hank Aaron and Ernie Banks and everyone in between.

Joey is taking care of the problem finally. By the time my mask gets to me it will have been ONE month. Offered a discount and free shipping to make up for problem. I'm not impressed with this company. I am glad that I wasn't needing this mask immediately.

Has anyone had any problems with this company? I ordered a Wilson Dyna Lite mask with deerskin pads. It didn't come in a week or so and I called them to inquire about my mask. The person on the phone said he emailed me and told me that the mask had to be ordered through another company and they would send it directly to me. I did not receive an email as he stated. He then said he would send me a email the following day about an estimated delivery date. Of course, I never rec'd an email. Today, I called and there was no answer or voice mail and they also didn't answer a follow up email. Going on three weeks and I'm getting pretty frustrated. In hind sight, I should have ordered from Ump Attire and spent the extra ten bucks. You get what you pay for as the saying goes. Learning the hard way.

Everything happens in Chillicothe: A summer in the Frontier league with Max McLeary, the one-eyed umpire. By Mike Shannon An interesting book about this one eyed umpire in small town USA. Umpiring for hardly any money, travelling, and scoring a few beers after the game before driving a couple of hours home. The story doesn't dwell on Max' one eye but does have some funny stories about his eye. Interesting to me in that I got a look into the lowest level of minor league ball as an umpire and as a player trying to just stick to a team. Years ago when we were young a lot of decisions were made that we have to live with today. The players in the book are all at this point in their lives. Brought me back a few years. Writer is a big baseball fan which helps but he is a wordy guy. Could have shortened the book a little and still came away with a good story.

I liked this book. Of course, it's easier to picture this guy when you grew up in this era like myself. Without ever seeing him on TV the younger generation may not appreciate Luciano as I do. I realize he isn't an umpire role model in this day in age but was a character though.

A fun read about a good person and of a different time for umpires.

Took about a 28 year break from umpiring and I'm back at it again. Things have changed a bit from way back when, such as equipment, the size of kids, and my 49 year old body. I am doing youth ball and really enjoyed this past season. I have found great info on this site! With all the forums here, I can get up to speed and learn from all you experienced umpires. Thanks.
