  1. they are talking about it ending his amateur career? the kid is 17 years old, the only thing ending his amateur career is his desire to play in the pros ... play another year of college, and dont be a hotshot (this was his second EJ apparently) but yeah, if you draw a line in the sand, there will be a line leading from the batter's box all the way to the parking lot as you drag your bat out of the stadium with you!
  2. IMHO ... anyone who attacks a man's family for something that happens at work, doesnt deserve to have an opinion ... his wife and kids didnt make that call, Jim did ... I dont understand people sometimes, why attack the family??
  3. my guess would be positioning as well, 1st and 3rd base extended ... but who knows, you should have yelled and asked him, lol
  4. whether or not they take the play and reverse it, I wish I could have every umpire handle the situation like Jim Joyce did, humbly admit that he made a mistake and man up to it ... semper_fi and I have had umpires at the Little League level of baseball banned from leagues in our area because of their hard-ass, "Joe West" style of umpiring ... its disgusting ... one of these banned person is an umpire instructor at LL Western Regional ... so not only is he an ass, but he is teaching others to be an ass ... baseball does not need instant replay, the game would drag over every little call ... the only reason that we know Joyce blew it that bad was the replay and stop-action it provides, live speed it doesnt look like too bad of a call ... although, personally, close play at 1B on a perfecto in the making, the guy is out no matter what
  5. umpiring a major game 3 seasons ago, we had a top of the line pitcher in our league, 12 years old and threw cheese ... i was behind the dish without plate shoes (I was a non-believer back then) ... and took a fastball straight to the top of the right foot, catcher never got a thought about catching it. anyway, the end result was 3 broken bones leading from the toes to the ankle ... sat out the rest of the season and bought plate shoes in the offseason ... now I preach the importance of plate shoes!
  6. i like this idea ... jboval, in semper's defense I have worked several games with the guy at the little league level and would not recommend anyone better on the field. controls the game with an "assertively humble" demeanor ... both semper, myself and one other gentleman run a scheduling service for the local little leagues (12 in total) so that they dont have to worry about umpires (unless we mess up ) ... we do this without assigning any scheduling costs to the leagues, minimal rates to the umpires, and a bunch of money out of our own pockets. what we get in return (and the reason I bring this up) are umpires that wont read their rule books, dont care where they should position themselves, forget about dress code, and generally want to get their money and go home. as I was reading the back and forth, I got the sense from your "the rulebook told me I could stand anywhere I want so I'm going to" comment was the feeling of that same type of umpire we deal with everyday. I'm sure semper's comments were not personally directed towards you, but moreover a response to the thinking that "ill do it whatever way I want to." and let me assure you that our volunteer umpires, the ones that dont take any pay, seem to take far more leeway than the paid ones. so ya, does it matter where you stand in your league? not to us ... but understand that there are umpires out there that take large amounts of pride with being an umpire, and the umpire position in baseball, and anything they see that would detract from the pride, gets reacted to strongly. hope this helps you guys ...
  7. Hey dont worry semper_fi ... Tim and I got something for you next time you go out on the field ...
