  1. Sorry, here's the attachment.
  2. Been using the wrong rule book. Found this in my Gandfather's stuff.
  3. The pitcher shall step “ahead of the throw.†Perhaps I am reading too much into this, but I read this to mean that he must step towards the base before throwing OR step off before throwing. I have a snap throw and then a step in the stitch above.
  4. Dickey -- Rule 8.01© Comment: The pitcher shall step “ahead of the throw.†A snap throw followed by the step directly toward the base is a balk. Looks like a balk to me. IMO this pickoff move begins from the rubber and precedes the step off.
  5. On #4, if the coach comes out and asks "What do you have" or "what did you see" are you ejecting, answering, or ignoring?
  6. Understood, looking for rules support. I'm fairly confident that it exists but I can't find it.

    Pitcher Gear?

USSSA tournament. Pitcher wearing black arm band on glove hand. Umpire asks him to remove. There was some discussion as to whether he should be required to remove it. Umpire's argument was "distracting." Looked through the OBR rules and I can't find anything regarding arm bands. I saw some language around glove colors and contents but nothing on arm bands, necklaces etc.. I guess I expected to find something. What am I missing?
  8. Had some discussion on this today and wanted some more opinions. Can a catcher wear a standard fielders glove? 1.12 says he MAY wear a mitt. 1.14 says everyone else can wear a glove. I assume that the interpretation then is that the catcher may not wear a mit because of 1.14? 1.12 The catcher may wear a leather mitt not more than thirty-eight inches 1.13 The first baseman may wear a leather glove or mitt not more than twelve 1.14 Each fielder, other than the first baseman or catcher, may use or wear a leather glove. Thanks, Mike
  9. Dayum, impossible call to make in real time and he got it.

I saw that as part of my research on this, but that link only references NCAA and FED (unless I am missing it). You're saying that it is also codified in OBR?

    Urban Myth

Okay guys, Here's another link. And I'll admit to not knowing one of these. In fact, it is so engrained in baseball around here that I assumed that I must be missing something in the rulebook. I've seen this called, and even called it. So far, I don't think that it has appeared in our lists above either. http://www.sdabu.com/mistakes_main.htm 45 degree balk!!! On Edit: I now know from further research that this is a rule set difference so I guess it's not a myth but just confusion.

    Urban Myth

The "myths" of baesball intrigue me. Here are some that I have seen / heard. I am sure that there are many more. What myths have you heard from coaches? 1. Hands are part of the bat 2. Pitch bounces and strikes batter (No base award because it bounced) 3. Batted ball that hits home plate is foul 4. You have to step off of the rubber to pick 1B. 5. Infield fly rule only applies to balls on the infield. (as defined by dirt) 6. Once a pitcher places his foot on the rubber, he can't turn it to parallel. (wind up) 7. A batted ball that stops on the chalk is foul. (c'mon everybody knows that) 8. Base runner that is struck by a batted ball in fair territory is always out.

Hey guys, Thanks for the assist. Funny thing was that a parent from the other team told me that I needed to read the rule book.

    Urban Myth

Hey guys, I am in a debate with a colleague and would like you all to weigh in. I'm not sure how to prove that a rule doesn't exist other than to show what does exists and then get some reputable umpires to weigh in as well. Right handed pitcher with runner on 1st. My pitcher attempts to pick off r1 without stepping off of the rubber 1st. Other coach, "That's a balk. He has to step off of the rubber to pick first." Me "Why, rules says he has to step toward the base that he's throwing to, does not say he has to step off 1st." Other coach "He has to turn his shoulder to throw to 1st, that's a balk." Me "He can turn his shoulder so long as he throws, if he doesn't it's a balk for faking to 1st." Please be professional in your responses as I plan on sending him in this direction to review. Thanks, Mike
  18. Why didn't you connect with the TD? I know I would have. Understood. In my opinion, taking it up with the TD is not something that you take lightly. You could risk, slander suits etc if you can't prove it. I knew that I wasn't going to be able to prove anything. Especially since the kids parents were in on it. My son was playing with the team and I elected to pull him. He didn't play in the game and we are finished with them. Probably more that I could have done; but, I didn't think of anything else to do at the time.
  19. Watched tourney this past weekend where 8u coach inserted 2 10yr olds into lineup, and then instructed entire team to lie about the situation if asked. The very next day, the exact same thing happend with another team. It seems that this kind of behavior is rampant in baseball and only seems to be getting worse. (I was a spectator in this game. Not coaching or umpiring) To me, it's almost not worth being a part of it anymore.
  20. Applies to youth leagues. Unknown rules? Heck, most youth league coaches and players don't even know which ruleset they are using?
  21. Shouldn't they have awarded 2 bases when 1b threw the ball into the stands?
  22. Runner had second, no slide and was standing on the base when f6 ran over and shoved r2 off of the base with a tag. It was most certainly a bush league move.
  23. Hey guys, I have been looking but can't find a rule on this. R2 is purposely pushed from second by f6 who has the ball. What's the call?
  24. I put it in the same column. Not complaining, just a baseball afficianado and wanted to see what the rule should have been.
  25. Probably true for some. Pretty competitve league. I was impressed that the ump got the interference call at all.
